Hiring a DJ or Band for Your Wedding – 10 Things to Know

Posted by: | Comments Comments Off

When you are deciding on the music to enhance your wedding day, there are quite a few decisions that need to be made. Your decision will also be influenced by your budget and the type of mood you would like to create at your wedding. Here are a few things to know about deciding on the music professionals for your day:

1. Check whether or not the band or DJ will supply their own sound equipment (including amplifiers, speakers, cd players or decks or a laptop, and a microphone) and/or instruments. The amount of equipment needed will depend on the size of your wedding and venue.

2. Keep in mind that a live band cannot play for hours on end and will generally require a short break of about 15 minutes every 45 minutes to an hour.

3. Make sure you check your contract with your band or DJ thoroughly to ensure that all the details discussed with you is included.

4. If you would like your band leader or DJ to be the MC (master of ceremonies) at your wedding as well, make sure he is able to do this.

5. Find out about any hidden costs. These can include a fee for the band to learn your first dance song, overtime costs, costs for extra equipment, meals, transport (if your wedding is far out of town).

6. Make sure you have all the contact details and cell phone numbers so you can inform them if anything changes.

7. Ensure your wedding music providers know what you expect them to wear at your wedding.

8. Ask your Band or DJ to do all their necessary sound checks before your guests arrive so any problems can be solved and your guests can arrive to the sound of music and not feedback!

9. Give your band or DJ a list of a few of your favorite songs and ask them to play those songs and to create a playlist with similar music.

10. Ensure you also let your wedding music professionals know what kind of music you do not like.

How To Become A DJ – 3 Tips For The Beginner DJ

Posted by: | Comments Comments Off
Sean Byrne asked:

In this article on how to become a DJ, we will be discussing some of the ways in which one can become a DJ. DJing is very much a fun job to be involved with. For one, the social life is pretty amazing! I know this because I DJ myself. I have been asked to play in different clubs and I've gotten to travel and experience many things because of DJing.

So as you can imagine, Djing is an attractive thing to get into. But a lot of people that start out Djing want to know of one popular question... and that question is this... How do I become a Dj? Below are your three tips on how to become a Dj.

1. Learn how to DJ... properly.

One of the most obvious fundamentals of becoming a DJ is of course... learning to program your music and entertain an audience. Its also important to learn and understand how to control DJ equipment. This could be learning how to use vinyl turntables, CD players or laptop software. These are the popular ways to perform your music. Pick one that you prefer to use and learn how to use it correctly.

2. Whats your music style?

Its important for you as a DJ to develop your own personal style of music. This way when people come to see your show they will have a good Idea about what sort of music you play! Your aim is to entertain a crowd with the right music. You want to appeal to a certain niche of music lovers. Once you master this you will be know as the DJ who plays, rock, soul, hip hop, house or whatever music you perform to a crowd.

3. Get yourself out there...

When you have covered the above tasks as a DJ, you then need to "Get yourself out there". What I mean by this is that you need to record a DJ set and paste it onto a tape, CD or whatever platform you wish to use. The reason for this is that you now have a product in which you can promote to your crowd/audience or a radio DJ or a Club promoter. These are the contacts you need to aim for and hunt down so to speak.

For instance, If you play Hip-hop music, then you need to go to the hip-hop clubs around your area and "give away" free cd's to the club promoters, the punters who are at the club etc...not everyone will listen to your mix, but if you are persistent, in which you need to be... your luck will come into play and you will at some point be given the chance to play to a crowd.

There you have it... these are basically the 3 things you need to develop yourself as a DJ. Continue to follow these steps and you will succeed. You just need to be persistent with it, that's all. I wish you the best of luck with it!

A decent mixer - $600

A pair of standard CDJ-1000 CD Players - $2000

A pair of good speakers - $1000

An amp to power the speakers - $400

Some good lighting effects - $600

A good library of music - PRICELESS!

Yes, it is truly an expensive "hobby" to be a DJ. But it need not be just a hobby. You CAN make back all you pay for your equipment ten-fold within 12 months if you just take that bit of extra time to care more about your playlists rather than your mixing techniques.

Most DJs fail not because they do not have good mixing / scratching / beat-mixing etc techniques, but because they don't play the music that people are willing to pay good money to hear.

There are so many DJs that will remain stubborn and only play their selected style of music, only to find themselves broke and wondering why nobody will book them and their amazing mixing talents.

It is so painfully obvious that any DJ's very first priority (since a DJ is employed to play music) is to get that much sorted out FIRST!

  • Sort your music out first - THEN worry about mixing techniques etc
  • Create your library to cater for all styles of music and for all age groups
  • Get over the ego issue of playing songs you don't like yourself

I have seen some of the DJs I have trained go on to make a great career for themselves. And once they understand that they must play the music that the crowd wants to hear, they can THEN go on to specialise in their preferred style of music.

Build the Reputation ... Then Specialize.

Don't be one of those DJs who spends hundreds (or even thousands) on their equipment but deny the most important aspect of what a DJ is employed for ... the music!

I recommend that aspiring DJs should build a great library of music FIRST. Even before they buy all the equipment needed. Build a library of great music that people want THEN look at the gear you need. Even skills such as mixing, beat-mixing etc can come later. There is an excellent resource available - Click Here

Here you will find details on how to download a pre-made list that we KNOW works!

If you are worried about the expense of buying all the music you need, there is good news here too! You can legally download MP3 tracks for only .20c per track!

Visit http://www.heapsofinfo.com and follow the link for MP3 downloads.

Don't be afraid to spend some time and money on building a quality library of music before wasting your money on equipment that will NEVER pay itself off if you aren't keeping your audience happy.

If you are worried about the expense of buying the pre-created playlist and the music you need ... consider the expense of NOT buying these crucial DJ items!

Things To Know About Different DJ Equipment

disc jockey equipment
Victor Epand asked:

If you are interested in becoming a Disc Jockey (DJ) you have come to the right place. To become a DJ you have got to first learn the art of mixing. You have to be well versed with the rhythm and remixing. But before you start you need to own a set of DJ equipment, which includes turntables, headphones, mixer and a good set of speakers.

These DJ equipments are costly and therefore it is important to do a thorough research before purchasing them. The following details the basic equipment that you need before starting your career as a DJ.

A turntable is generally a rotating platform maintaining a constant speed motor driven phonograph or a gramophone. This DJ equipment is used to mix and scratch records. It has given rise to the term turntabilism and has led to professional CD players with the same capability. When you are looking forward to buying a turntable make sure you consider the features, which include the following.

- Direct drive to give you better control over how fast the record will start and stop.

- Tone arm feature gives you the option to adjust your tone. The tone arm up and down in combination along with the anti-skate mechanism can produce a proper tone arm balance.

- Anti-shake feature gives the tone arm just enough balance as not to skip when playing.

- Make sure your tone arm has a counterweight feature, which is used to give the proper balance for the tone arm itself so as to not damage the needle while playing your vinyl.

- The pitch control is needed because the 33 and 45 RPMs (Revolutions Per Minute) settings are not enough. Your pitch control should be on the right hand side and have a positive and negative range of 896.

Another important part of DJ equipment to make it a complete system is a good set of speakers. You need to buy quality speakers, but you need to know exactly what you are looking for. Some of the important features that you need to look into while buying this DJ equipment is the watts, dimension of the speakers, quality of the speaker box itself, and magnet size. The most important thing to do while buying speakers is you need to hear how it sounds with a quality mix tape.

Another DJ equipment that you cannot do without is the DJ mixer. It is a full-featured DJ and beat mixing system to create your own custom DJ style music. They can include both audio and even video player with two independent decks and professional sound quality. It can sync beat and has pitch control. It has 2 to 6 stereo channels for connecting and mixing audio sources. Each channel has a phono input with RIAA equalization for turntables. It also has one or two lines level input options for other sources such as CD players and laptop.

Besides that it has 2 or 3 microphone inputs, peak meters to aid matching levels between channels and monitor the signal for clipping. It also has a headphone jack plugs and a headphone volume control.

Besides the above-mentioned DJ equipment, there are other software programs that can support the best DJ solutions with pro quality. They can add to your DJ equipment and give extra advantage to your DJ work. It can enhance your creativity in creating music on your PC as well.
