First off, you probably really need to know your music and it probably would be good if you had some experience. Some schools have it, where you can dj for whatever event. Or check out a website for radio broacasters. Google is a good place to start. You’d also need an audition tape to send to the radio stations.
Getting into broadcasting is very tough now. Especially with all of the “Mega owners” like Clear Channel having multiple stations in every market. But if radio is something you would like to pursue, I can give you some tips.
First, we in the business prefer the term “Air Personality” or “Air Talent” instead of DJ. A DJ is the guy that spins records in a smokey nightclub, or weddings. We, on the other hand, need to have a lot more skills.
You will want to get some formal education, and training. Most colleges have Communications programs… look into one.
You will need to start small. Nobody starts at the top. Also be ready for a lot of rejection. For every ten tapes you send out to stations, you are lucky to get feedback from one of them.
When you are starting out, you have to be ready to accept any offer that arises at a radio station. You will not be starting out at a “Drive-Time” slot, more than likely, you will start off doing part-time fill-ins.
Radio is a very fun field to work in. When you start off you will not make much money…. But once you move up to larger markets, the pay will also get much better.
I wish you well in your future career in radio.
