How to Ride your Passion and Make Money From Music

disc jockey
Sarika Kabra posts:

What if I tell you that -

a) You can make a better than decent living out of your passion in music?

b) Your passion results in a life long romance and an opportunity to see and visit places?

c) A number of persons have created a great name for themselves in the profession of a disc jockey and are earning more than the top ranking CEOs of some big companies.

Sounds like a dream? Doesn’t it? Well here is all that you want to know about various options available to you in the field of music.

First things first. You need to decide the field you want to specialize in. You may be a super performer, a great entertainer. All these professional choices are open to you for further advancing in your career.

There are a few things which you need to bear in mind before embarking on the great musical journey of your life. Having decided to make a career in the field, you would definitely be brimming with skills and talent. What you may require is perhaps some ideas about what options are available to you in the vast field of music.

Let us concentrate on the profession of a performer. A performer gives shape and his personal touch to music and gets maximum accolades for a nice performance. You can be a part of a band or independent. If you are a band member, you can be a vocalist, a drummer, a pianist or a guitarist. In that case, one of the avenues available to you is to give a live performance at many places such as night clubs, weddings, holiday parties, company functions, music stores, star hotels, cruise liners, grand openings and so on. There is a great demand for a disc jockey and you may end up earning good amounts as you gain experience in the area.

Another area you can explore is to cut and place your own CD for sale in the market. It is a good idea to package your music and create a bit of hype around it. Remember it is show business. You may be a powerhouse of talent but would still require some publicity to sell it.

Teaching music is yet another career choice available to you. This is a wonderful profession, which does not require a college degree or certificate. All you require is better than average credentials, word of mouth publicity and the ability to play an instrument. In fact, you can even take this up part-time along with any of the other options; you are sure to find hordes of eager students in your locality.

You can also work in a recording studio and help people make their own albums. Of course you would need to be a more discerning in various genres of music such as Jazz, Classical, Country, Rock and Urban etc. so as to be able to offer sound advice and make a difference in their music. You would also need to be conversant with techniques such as audio mastering and digital music recording to be better off.

Music is a vast field and the sky is the limit for those who want to make a beginning. Believe me; your life will never be same again.

Want to Have Fun and Earn? Get Started Today

disc jockey
Sarika Kabra posts:

You would have seen and heard a disc jockey or a DJ in short performing on radios, in clubs, weddings, store openings and other occasions. The job of a DJ seems like a roller coaster ride. Doesn’t it? You are having fun, dancing and performing, you attend great parties and also earn decent money in the bargain. Can there be another profession which will allow you to have fun and earn at the same time? Yes, DJ is one of a few such job openings. But remember it is not simply fun that goes into making a good DJ - you would need to put in lot of efforts to make a mark in the field. Let us give you some idea about how to make a career as a successful DJ.

Well, there are a few ingredients which make a good DJ. First of course is immense love for music. A DJ has to have more than just fair knowledge, and a flair for various classes of music such as Classic, Rock, Folk, dance etc. He should be a good conversationalist and should have a great sense of humor. He should also love and enjoy the company of people and lastly have immense presence of mind. If you have all that, the field is open for you to make your own mark.

There are various types of disc jockey jobs available in the market. You can work as one in a radio station. You can work as a club DJ. Here you would work in night clubs, hotels, bars and stadiums. You would host programs on AM/FM satellite channels and be the face of the channel. As a mobile DJ, you will be on your own. You would be having your own studio equipment, recordings and works. You will be traveling to private parties, functions, weddings, corporate events, outings and dance parties.

DJs are more than mere music buffs. They are great performers, dancers, composers and have an eye for detail. They always need to be on their toes to give a decent performance. They also need to connect to the audience and hence need to understand the dynamics of music and various mixing techniques, music software and audio mastering technology to bring a novelty to their performance.

As a DJ, you will also need to have fair bit of idea about typical DJ equipment. This includes digital music recording systems, music players such as CD players, MP3 players and other digital musical players, sound systems, mixers, micro phones, head phones, synthesizers etc. If you are a mobile DJ, you would need to know how to do trouble shooting on most of the occasions.

Having done all that, the next logical question is how to start in the profession. Well, there is just one mantra for success. Practice and more practice. Talk in front of a mirror as if you were performing before a discerning audience. Get used to listening to your own voice. A very important tip as you need to be comfortable with your diction and style to be at ease. In the initial stages, grab any opportunity that comes your way of performing. Be it at your friend’s place or your own private function, prepare well to perform. Work to hone your talents, and the world is your oyster!

How to Make an Early Career in Music

disc jockey
Sarika Kabra posts:

Music forms a part of every person’s life. Love it or **** it, but you can’t ignore it. Of course the degree of involvement with music may vary from person to person, and some are more involved with music than others. If you are interested in music purely as a passing interest, you would be getting along with listening to the latest songs, or those of your choice. If you are a serious music buff who is interested in making a career out of music, your level of interest would be totally different. Whatever be the category you belong to, music will continue to form a part of your life.

These days the TV world is abuzz with the latest form in which people are making a start in the field of music. What was earlier limited to an odd show here and there has now morphed into a full and complete industry that is aimed at budding youngsters who have the talent, but do not know where to get a break. These shows are in the form of competitions and contests that filter out the best talent, and then give them a chance to record their own music in a professional music recording studio. American Idol has been a hit year after year. While the critics may term this as overexposure for children at an impressionable age, the fact remains that a lot of talent emerges in these shows, that would have otherwise never gone beyond the family get-togethers that sometimes give a chance to the aspiring singer.

Another place where a decent career can be made is as a disc jockey. Again a line that was not in favor some time back, this career option has really taken off in recent times. Why, I have a friend, Richard, who works in his computer shop in the day, and DJs at night in the club of his choice. He is in it purely for the love of music, and does not charge for his performances (I was lucky to be presented a collection of remixes he had not yet released in the market). Besides the hotel at which he DJs regularly, Richard gets regular invitations from visitors to perform at private dos and occasions where they need really good music. So while he does not earn anything from the hotel, the private invitations add up to decent pocket money for our friend. Of course, he also utilizes his spare time at the computer shop for his music recording and prepare for the evening.

You can take the above as a perfect example of using one job to advertise your work and use it to project your capabilities. Join the profession to have fun and earn decent cash at the same time. You can exploit your talent to make good music, using pre-recorded music, or simply record your own music and make it popular in your shows.

Earning money was never so much fun perhaps!

Making Music: Swaying the Crowd With your Tracks

disc jockey
Sarika Kabra posts:

Your parents may never forgive you for your career choice but being a Disc Jockey is a great way to make a living. If you have a passion for music and can build a great rapport with the crowd DJ’ing might just be your calling. Think about all the advantages you will be enjoying if you choose to take it up as a regular job.

Advantage No.1: You will still be able to maintain and manage a Full-time job. Most DJ’s play at night, since the hottest spot for action, the clubs are busier during nighttime. As a result you can work wherever you like during the day and then finally head off to the club at end the day on a musical note.

Advantage No.2: The job pays handsomely, and for almost no effort on your part. If you are a music enthusiast playing good tracks and making them sound better should be a cakewalk for you.

Advantage No.3: Total freedom in your work zone and an equal amount of space to help spread your creative wings. DJ’ing ensures a quick and easy flow of money. Gigs are popular and thus most DJ’s make money hand on fist. With the cash flow taken care of you can easily try out new things to suit your own creative taste.

Advantage No.4: Whether you are playing at a club or at a wedding you will be getting oodles of those complimentary drinks and food items constantly, so party on Bro.

If DJ’ing sounds like your cup of tea here are a few pointers. Begin by broadening your musical horizon. As a DJ you will be expected to play a lot of music, many of which may not suit your personal taste. To equip yourself for this challenge get your hand on all the music you possibly can.

As you probably know not all music works on the dance floor. Decide what is to be your forte, is it Trance that you specialize in? Or is it Hip-Hop? Are you eager to experiment with funk? Or rap?

For anyone looking to be a DJ, good music recording software is a must. A number of top DJ’s also have his or her own recording studios but this is obviously not an option for everybody. If you do have access to a recording studio however, do make good use of it.

Now, the rest of your requirements will depend on whether you are looking to be placed in a disco or a club or whether you choose to be mobile. Mobile DJs play for various events such as high school reunions, parties, socials, proms, weddings, private parties etc. They usually carry their sound recordings in some preferred medium, such as MP3, midi file etc. on compact discs or vinyl records or in MP3 compatible devices such as an iPod. To playback the recorded music mobile DJ’s require at least 2 playback devices so as to ensure continuous playback.

On the other hand if you are a permanent DJ at a club or a disco you will have your own console with a turntable, and will thus not have to carry your own playback devices.

So what are you waiting for, if music be the food of love go ahead and play on. And this time watch the crowd sway to your tune!

Buying the Best Used DJ Turntables

turntable
Victor Epand asked:

There was a time, decades ago, when the turntable was a staple of every household. It was where you would listen to the music of your favourite artists, while staring at the album covers and figuring out what the meaning of the album cover means. However, once tape cassettes, CDs and mp3s came along, the need to use turntables disappeared and they were sent to the junkyard.

That was, until the mid-1980s when hip hop and dance music starting to become popular. In this type of music, turntables are an essential instrument that helps to create the unique sound of the music.

Now, turntables are a popular type of musical equipment that is used by DJs all over the world in dance competitions and other types of music events. Since hip hop is so popular right now and dance/trance music is still making headway after its golden age of the 1990s, you can expect your kids may ask you for a turntable.

So, if you don't have one in the garage collecting dust since 1972, you are going to have to go to an online store or pawn shop to get what you want because they are not made anymore, except in certain places. If you think you are going to buy it in one of the specialty online stores, think again, they are far too expensive.

So, your option is eBay or pawn shops. It is recommended you check out the pawn shops first because there will often be tonnes of turntables there as people trade them in when they are no longer useful to them. In fact, you can probably buy ten turntables for $50 there because they are an obsolete technology. While you are at it, pick up a few VCRs too, they are going to be obsolete soon enough.

There is no point in buying an expensive turntable system unless you know that your child is going to take to using the turntable and not throw it into their closet after a month because they are bored with it at that point.

This is why a used turntable is the best option because it means that your child will not be under pressure to like using the turntable because you only paid five dollars for it. Another option to finding a turntable, other than online shops, is to go to a garage sale where people will sometimes sell them for between one dollar and ten dollars. Often, for the turntable enthusiast, this is a gold mine.

When you buy a turntable, you are buying a piece of history, and you are giving it a new life as an instrument in dance or hip hop music. Children these days probably don't even know that a turntable was once the only way to play music, thinking it is just something used by DJs.

Nonetheless, when you buy a turntable for your child, make sure it is a used one because the new ones are far too expensive and you do not want to spend money on something your child will bore of quickly.

Things To Know About Different DJ Equipment

disc jockey equipment
Victor Epand asked:

If you are interested in becoming a Disc Jockey (DJ) you have come to the right place. To become a DJ you have got to first learn the art of mixing. You have to be well versed with the rhythm and remixing. But before you start you need to own a set of DJ equipment, which includes turntables, headphones, mixer and a good set of speakers.

These DJ equipments are costly and therefore it is important to do a thorough research before purchasing them. The following details the basic equipment that you need before starting your career as a DJ.

A turntable is generally a rotating platform maintaining a constant speed motor driven phonograph or a gramophone. This DJ equipment is used to mix and scratch records. It has given rise to the term turntabilism and has led to professional CD players with the same capability. When you are looking forward to buying a turntable make sure you consider the features, which include the following.

- Direct drive to give you better control over how fast the record will start and stop.

- Tone arm feature gives you the option to adjust your tone. The tone arm up and down in combination along with the anti-skate mechanism can produce a proper tone arm balance.

- Anti-shake feature gives the tone arm just enough balance as not to skip when playing.

- Make sure your tone arm has a counterweight feature, which is used to give the proper balance for the tone arm itself so as to not damage the needle while playing your vinyl.

- The pitch control is needed because the 33 and 45 RPMs (Revolutions Per Minute) settings are not enough. Your pitch control should be on the right hand side and have a positive and negative range of 896.

Another important part of DJ equipment to make it a complete system is a good set of speakers. You need to buy quality speakers, but you need to know exactly what you are looking for. Some of the important features that you need to look into while buying this DJ equipment is the watts, dimension of the speakers, quality of the speaker box itself, and magnet size. The most important thing to do while buying speakers is you need to hear how it sounds with a quality mix tape.

Another DJ equipment that you cannot do without is the DJ mixer. It is a full-featured DJ and beat mixing system to create your own custom DJ style music. They can include both audio and even video player with two independent decks and professional sound quality. It can sync beat and has pitch control. It has 2 to 6 stereo channels for connecting and mixing audio sources. Each channel has a phono input with RIAA equalization for turntables. It also has one or two lines level input options for other sources such as CD players and laptop.

Besides that it has 2 or 3 microphone inputs, peak meters to aid matching levels between channels and monitor the signal for clipping. It also has a headphone jack plugs and a headphone volume control.

Besides the above-mentioned DJ equipment, there are other software programs that can support the best DJ solutions with pro quality. They can add to your DJ equipment and give extra advantage to your DJ work. It can enhance your creativity in creating music on your PC as well.

How to Make a Grand Success of your Party

disc jockey equipment
Sarika Kabra asked:

Having seen the basics of selecting a good DJ, let us examine some more of the multitude of options on offer. Here is part two of how to select the right disc jockey for your get-together.

Single Unit Disc Jockeys: A single unit disc jockey is a one-man show who is in the business for the sheer pleasure of making good music. An aspiring professional less the flashy wherewithal, he may well be the answer to your needs if you are looking for a low-cost affair.

The single unit disc jockey you hire may have simple equipments but may well have liveliness and vigor to put life in the party. On the flip side, the use of much simpler studio equipment may result in their not having enough back up of the songs required. Then as they are not professionals they may be comparatively not so responsible. While you may end up saving a few pennies here, it is best to try out the competence of such a person before you hire him. Ask him for references or a trial performance before you make your final decision.

Yellow pages, Friends or Relatives: It is the easiest way to know about the disc jockey but then again it is your luck as everyone has his own choice. Of course, from the yellow pages, you can get the telephone numbers and the addresses of the DJs but then you have little idea about the better ones!!! Do not get disheartened as we have a solution to this also. Here are few tips to keep in mind while talking to them

a. It is important to create a rapport with the Disc Jockey over the phone. Take notice of their way of speaking and approach - after all it depicts their style and personality which is a part of their profession.

b. Are they returning your phone calls? Were they prompt in doing so? This again shows proficiency in their field and their approach towards work.

c. Enquire about the equipments they are using. Check up if he uses his own studio equipment to mix his own music or he uses premixed music. This can give you an idea about the talent of that person.

d. You also have to check whether they have digital music recording or normal recording. This is likely to affect the quality of the music produced.

e. Ask for the list of songs they would play on that day. It should match the occasion and the type of guests invited.

f. One of the most important things to check is whether he fixes his dance floor and the quality of the lighting used. Additional expenses may be avoided if these facilities are provided by the Deejay. Most do, but it always better to be sure.

Make the best of this knowledge to get the right man for your wedding function. After all, it’s a very special occasion and you would like everything to be memorable and absolutely perfect!
