How to Plan For a Successful Prom
Posted by: | CommentsAs the spring semester of high school resumes in Chicago, many students begin to have prom on their minds. Prom committees have usually formed at this point and a lot of the necessary steps to plan the event have already taken place. Planning a Chicago prom can be quite a task and can often go unrecognized and unrewarded. Often times if the prom dance is a flop the members of the committee will take a lot of the heat. So to help avoid some of those unnecessary negative comments we've created a step by step guide to help aid you in the planning of your Chicago Prom.
So where do we begin? When is the right time to start thinking prom? The correct answer would one year prior to the date. There are several things that will need to be taken care of that time. Listed below are a few steps you'll want to take one year prior to your Chicago Prom event...
Choose prom committee members and create sub-committees. Without the prom committee there would be no prom, so having the right leaders on the committee can often make or break your event. Your Chicago Prom committee should be made up of advisors and various student volunteers. Set a realistic budget. Creating a realistic budget is a very important step in planning a prom. You'll want to begin by collecting the most detailed information on how much each element will cost. This will give you a good idea for how much to budget for. You'll then want to take things into account like how much money will be coming from fundraising and from sponsors. From there you can then determine how many tickets you'll need to sell to break even for the event. Set the date. Setting a date for your event can be very difficult. You'll want to take things into account like holidays, school activities, sporting events, and even neighboring school's prom dates. You'll want to choose a date that coincides with all of those things. Nine times out of ten you probably you won't be able to please everyone with the selected date. Choose you location/venue. You've successfully created a budget and selected a date now it's time to book a venue. When choosing a venue you'll want to find a facility that will be able to hold your crowd comfortably. You'll also want to look into food and catering options at those venues. If you're planning on having entertainment and dancing, will the venue be able to accommodate those needs? As you search for venues you'll notice a lot of reception halls prefer not to host school proms on Saturday evenings because they can conflict with their high priority wedding dates. Make sure you confirm your venue early as the longer you wait the harder it'll be to settle on the right place.
After you've done all the steps above you're well on your way to creating a successful Chicago prom, you can now relax and have the next couple months off before the next batch of planning begins. Around 8 months before your prom you'll want to pick up with the committee meetings again and begin the next stages.
Choose a theme. Choosing a prom theme often can be one of the most important decisions your prom committee will make. Choosing the right theme can make your prom stand out from others in the past and can be that key component in creating a memorable night. When choosing a theme you'll want to think of the mood you'd like to portray that night. You'll want to take into consideration whether you'd like to portray a fun mood, romantic mood, or even a mysterious mood. A good Chicago prom theme should revolve around an innovative title, unique decorations, and a treasured song. This is when you'll want a lot of input from your committee members. Discuss fundraising opportunities. Fundraising is very important in planning a Chicago prom and should never be overlooked. After adding up the total expenses and dividing it by the number of students attending the event the cost per ticket can many times be rather expensive. Students are usually aware that prom isn't cheap so fundraisers are often appreciated. There are hundreds of fundraising ideas available on the internet and you should utilized them when planning your event. Book your Disc Jockey. This is another crucial and overlooked step that many don't spend a lot of time on. The success of your event a lot of times rides on the music that's to be played and the DJ that's playing it. There are hundreds of Chicago DJ companies and only a handful of good ones. Make sure you spend some time when selecting your entertainment. Prices can vary greatly; most Chicago Prom DJs are priced around $1,000 and go up from there. You'll want to hire an experienced disc jockey that specializes in prom entertainment, not just your average wedding DJ. Begin discussing decoration ideas. Now is the time when you'll want to start talking decorations. You'll want to choose decorations that revolve around your theme for the evening. As you plan for you Chicago Prom you'll be surprised as to all the decorations available out there. You can always buy pre-assembled decorations, but they'll cost you. Talk with your committee members and see what they can come up with on their own. This can help save on the decoration costs. A lot of schools in Chicago have actually cut back on their decorations and have invested their money into the dinner and the entertainment. This may be an route you'd like to take.
You've now completed most of the important steps towards planning your Chicago Prom. We recommend waiting about 2 or 3 months prior to your prom before you begin with the next steps.
Order invitations, programs, party items, and tickets. Now is the time when you'll want to send out for these important items. It can sometimes take a few weeks to get things printed so be sure to get your final work to the printers before it's too late. You'll also want to order your royalty party items like crowns, sashes, tiaras, and etc. Begin your advertising campaign. You'll want to start hyping the excitement of your Chicago prom. You may want to consider hanging posters, placing ads in the school newspapers, hand our flyers, and/or even run commercials on your student radio station. Book a photographer. At this time you'll want to finalize your photographer. You'll want to decide how pictures will be taken that night and where in the venue will they run their operation. Often times schools will use their yearbook photographers for the miscellaneous photos and then hire another professional photographer for portraits. You'll want to consider several options with your prom committee.
The time has finally arrived and it's now 2 weeks prior to your event. It's crunch time and there are a few other details that'll need to be taken care of....
Send out your invitations and start selling your tickets. Choose a central location in your school to setup a ticket sales booth. Make sure the kids are aware of this location. You may want to sell tickets at normal prices for the first week and then raise the price as the event draws nearer. This will encourage immediate ticket sales and will prevent students from holding off until the last day to purchase their tickets. Confirm your vendors. Now is the time when you should finalize all the details with your venue, DJ, caterer, and photographer. You'll want to make sure everyone's timeline is laid out the same and there aren't any conflicting schedules. You'll also want to confirm your theme song with your Chicago Prom DJ. Don't forget to call your chaperones as too! Setup a schedule for decorating your venue. You'll want to assign committee members the task of decorating the venue. Make sure you confirm times with the venue and they are ok with you hanging decorations. You'll want to take time and read through any instructions kits that came with your decorations. Make sure all the pieces are included in your kits and figure out the estimated time it'll take to set them all up. Hold nominations for prom court. This job usually falls under your job description as well. You'll want to decide how nominations will be made and who will conduct them at the event.
After you've completed the above steps you should be well on your way to create a successful Chicago Prom. As you can see a lot of work and time goes into planning a big event like this. When it's all said in done though, the students you work with will remember this night for the rest of their lives.

Learning to Be a Disc Jockey?
Posted by: | CommentsThis is probably the most common question for all beginner disc jockeys or also referred to as a D.J. for short. The first thing to do is to do a little research. What type of D.J. do you want to be? There are different types of D.J.'s because they D.J. in different ways. The three major types of D.J.'s are:
Mobile D.J./ Mobile Entertainer Club D.J. Battle D.J.
Mobile D. J.
They take their equipment on the road and do gigs at Universities, private parties, special occasions and the like. They use just about all types of disc jockey equipment including karaoke equipment.
Mobile D.J.'s are entertainers also.
They get the crowd involved by playing games with the music, singing, playing music and other party favorites that involve entertaining the crowd.
Mobile D.J.'s usually have a disc jockey PA system that they bring with them to the gig.
This allows the disc jockey to broadcast the music being played. A PA system consists of an amplifier and 2 speakers.
Club D. J.
It is the Club disc jockeys ability to play many types of music and make it sound good that makes them stand out. That is why they get paid the big bucks.
To most it is not a mystery why the club disc jockey is the most sought after D.J. One of my favorite club disc jockeys that cross all categories of disc jockeying is D.J. Cash Money out of Philadelphia, PA. He has some of the fastest hands on the faders and turntables that I have ever seen.
For their music most club disc jockeys use Technics SL-1200/1210 Turntables. Now you can find club D.J.'s using Final Scratch by Stanton or Serato Scratch Live by Rane. Club D.J.'s "play the crowd" meaning they have developed the ability to read the crowd and know what songs to play based on crowd response.
This takes time to develop but once you have mastered this step it allows you to explore new songs in the club that you might not otherwise play due to inexperience. This is a great way to make a livelihood if you can get a residence in several clubs.
Battle D.J. or Turntablists
They are a special group of highly skilled disc jockeys that do tricks with the turntables and mixer. Through years of practice they have been able to develop their skills of scratching, mixing and most importantly beat juggling.
Beat juggling is when a D.J. is able to manipulate two records to the point where it sounds like he is creating one new beat from two different ones. Because these skills are highly developed most battle D.J.'s can be a club D.J. or a mobile D.J. because the skills cross all categories of disc jockeying.
After you know what type of D.J. you want to be you need to find out what type of equipment disc jockeys use.
The 4 questions any new disc jockey must ask before buying any new equipment are:
How or in what capacity will I be using my D.J. equipment (e.g. club D.J., remixing, for parties)? How much do I want to spend? Where will I buy all of this D.J. equipment? What D.J. equipment do I actually need? Each one of the three types of disc jockeys that I mentioned above uses the same D.J. equipment for the most part.
These are:
Two (2) turntables like the NumarkTTX1 Turntables Two (2) slipmats Two (2) cartridges like the Shure M44 7 mounted on a Technics Headshell One (1) mixer like the Rane TTM56 (Mixers) One (1) pair of headphones like the Stanton Pro D.J. 3000 Headphones

Want To Select A Disc Jockey For Your Wedding? Expunge Your Worries
Posted by: | CommentsA disc jockey (also called DJ or deejay) is an individual who selects and plays pre-recorded music for an intended audience. He puts life in the parties. But if he is bad he can bring a negative impact of the party so you have to be very cautious while hiring them.
If you are planning to throw a party for your wedding in the coming month, and you are having nightmares after recently attending a DJ party of your friend, don't lose heart for help is at hand! No do not panic - I will tell you how to go about choosing the right DJ for your memorable day. Here are few guidelines to decide on real good one and hopefully put all your fears to end.
Disc Jockey Agencies : The disc jockey agencies have many disc jockeys on their books with studio equipment predominantly owned by the agency. Or they may be having some contracts with other DJs also. But choosing a DJ through them can be a risky affair as the quality may vary from company to company, and within the company, amongst individuals. Some may be very good but some of their DJ staff they may not have been even heard or seen for months, so they can be short of good quality. Moreover, some of these employees are poorly paid so they find it very hard to maintain a class as they try to cut on the cost of their music collection. Some, in an effort to cut costs, will even resort to illegally copying music onto tapes, compact discs or mini discs. This being the case, they find it hard to keep motivated and interested enough to deliver a superior level of attention, service and entertainment.
Some of the agencies have also been known to have music software and can forward you a list of songs but again it depends upon the DJ. If unfortunately you get a wrong selection then you are left at the mercy of a Disc Joker instead of a Disc Jockey.
You must ensure from your DJ agency that how much personal attention they will give to you as most of the time they are more interested in putting up more DJs on the road rather than providing the best possible service to the client.
In House Disc Jockeys: The other option is to check from your function venue, as most of them will recommend a good disc jockey that they have seen performing. A few arrange it themselves as an added service to the client. After all, their reputation depends upon the disc jockey. Sometimes a bad DJ can spoil the effect of the good catering done by the hotels, so it is likely they would like you to have the best to give them a good reputation.
In part two of this article, we shall see some more options of Disc Jockeys available to you. We shall also see some of the tips that will help you make a wise decision for selecting the right person to make your party a roaring success.

Getting a Club DJ’s Gig
Posted by: | CommentsA DJ or a deejay is the short form for a disc jockey. A disc jockey is the person who plays music for the people and selects and plays according to the audience's taste. There are various types of DJ's such as a Radio DJ, Club-DJ, Mobile DJ's etc. A radio disc jockey plays music on radio stations. A club DJ is a deejay who plays music at clubs, bars, discotheques, at parties etc. A mobile disc jockey travels and plays music for audiences.
A Club disc-jockey usually uses the following equipment:
- Music
- Sound Mixer
- Multiple Sequencer
- Headphones
- Microphone
There are other equipments that augment a DJ's work such as the DJ mixer, disc-jockey digital controller etc, but the above mentioned are the most basic requirements for a disc-jockey.
If you are looking to get a DJ gig then choose a mid level club as large night clubs do not offer jobs that easily, though they are high paying ones. Large clubs not just offer more money but also a huge audience. To get a club DJs job you need to find out the clubs and their sizes in the area of your choice.
You would need to go to each one and meet the concerned person at the clubs and find out if they need a disc jockey. Even if there is a current D-J you can offer your mix CD and provide contact details. You never know when they might need another club disc- jockey.
Keep visiting the clubs every few weeks and let them know that you are there and in due course you will get a Club DJ gig.

Choosing the Right DJ to Hire For Your Event
Posted by: | CommentsA DJ is an important investment no matter the engagement: weddings, proms, and large-scale work and personal parties all need good quality music handled by a professional. When it comes time to hire a Melbourne DJ, you really need to take the time to do your research. This way, you can find a professional who will play music that is appropriate for the event and with whom you can work to make the get-together a success. The following are some tips to help you find the best DJ for your event.
First, you need to think about the kind of music you want for this event. If you are having a wedding, you may want a mix of fast-moving songs and slower songs to which people can dance to. If you are planning a business party, you may want to hire a Melbourne DJ who can play music that is low-key so that people can mingle and small talk to their heart's content. If you know you **** country music and do not want it at your event, then you may not want to hire someone who specializes in this area or throws regular square-dances.
Next, you should ask people for recommendations, opinions, and referrals about area DJs. Everyone from neighbors and coworkers to family members and friends will have helpful advice that will help you hire a Melbourne DJ that is right for your party. Either they will have direct experience with local DJs or will know someone who has and can tell you whom to consider and whom to back away from.
Hop on the Internet when it comes time to hire a Melbourne DJ. This way, you can see what people have to say about area DJs and you can check out different DJs' websites. You want to get a general idea of the events this professional works. You bet money that if someone has had a terrible experience with a DJ that this information is somewhere on the Internet. Thus, if you want the inside scoop before you try to hire a Melbourne DJ, the Internet can definitely prove to be an excellent resource.
Once you have a tentative list of DJs, it is time to contact them. Pay attention to how fast or quickly they respond and in what manner. You want to hire a Melbourne DJ who is professional and organized. Thus, if it takes a week for a DJ to respond to your inquiry or if they are short, rude, or make inappropriate remarks in their phone call or email, you may want to go with someone else.
Lastly, if you want to hire a Melbourne DJ that is right for you, you have to meet with this professional in person. This way, you can get a feel for his or her personality and can decide if you feel comfortable using their services. Ask a lot of questions to see if this DJ is willing to play what you want them to play.

Your Next Big Event Dilemma? Live Disc Jockey Vs Your iPod
Posted by: | CommentsIt used to be that if you were having a get together you had to pick up your local phone book and call every Entertainment Company phone number to get an idea what your event would cost. Inevitably you and in most cases your significant other then had to make a choice based on budget and your gut feeling alone. A lot has changed over the years, special event disc jockeys don't use tapes or records anymore, heck most don't even use CD's and as for the phone book, well with the worldwide web growing by leaps and bounds every day that phone book is better used to replace the broken leg on that old couch in the basement than as a tool to assist you in finding a qualified host or disc jockey for your upcoming special event.
As I stated above most North American mobile DJ services have gone digital storing all their music on massive external hard drives to avoid the disc damage that was inevitable in the past. With that in mind a lot of folks think "Hey, why pay a disc jockey service hundreds of dollars when I have a perfectly good iPod that does basically the same thing. I can rent a sound system from my local music store for under $50 and just run my music through the iPod, right?" Well, yes you could do just that, however there is much more to be considered when planning an event that you want to run well.
Let me start by pointing out that music tastes are vast and unpredictable and chances are just because you think that your musical intellect is flawless chances are at least half of your guests won't and will be gone from your event within just a few hours. Another very important thing to consider is that your guests are going to ask for requests, a lot of them, that's a guarantee and there is absolutely no way you could possibly have all the songs that are being requested. I've been in this business running entertainment companies throughout Ontario for over two decades and can tell you our music library currently sits at over 40,000 tracks, I update new music weekly and still end up not having at least two or three requests on average despite our best effort, so as you see very quickly; your 200 song iPod playlist is definitely not going to cut it!
Then we move along to the sound system, although I don't ever recommend doing your event yourself I will point out at the end of this article the basic setup needed to effectively disc jockey with your iPod for those willing to roll the dice. What more can I say, basically to DJ your own event you are going to need to rent a few speakers, speaker stands, amplifier, soundboard and a bunch of wires to make it all work. That's the bare minimum, you could also get some lights and lasers etc. but that really depends on your event age group and type of party you are hosting. Sounds easy enough right? Again I can't argue the fact that this really isn't rocket science but...
What happens a lot is that the self proclaimed disc jockey of the night sets up his rented gear and checks his sound, but wait, why does it sound like I'm in a tunnel, no maybe a tin can; well you get my point acoustics have as much to do with your party as anything else. A good disc jockey company and an experienced, trained host can use equalizers to adjust the sound until you are no longer dancing in what sounds kind of like an echo chamber! They have done dozens, some hundreds of events or parties just like yours and understand sound, by correctly evaluating the room and speaker alignment they can make everything sound perfect, so good in fact you would swear you where at your favourite local hotspot.
So far it's 2 and 0 for the DJ's of North America but I do have one more very important factor for you to consider, like anything else iPods, speakers, sound boards and even wires can break or become glitchy, when you rent equipment you don't get any extra just the basics so what happens if halfway through the night one of your speaker wires dies? Or your rented dance floor light blows? Surely you don't have replacements?
OMG Party Over! That's right folks your parent's 40th anniversary party is now ruined and who do they have to thank? You, the guy or girl who didn't want to shell out the cash for the professionals, If only you had hired a pro disc jockey service I'd be willing to bet they would have had extra wires, speakers, bulbs and such along with a massive music library to keep all your guests happy all night long because the music was great, all their requests were played and sounded awesome!
I don't suggest disc jockeying your own upcoming event, but if I can't talk you out of it here are some helpful suggestions...
You are going to need to rent the following equipment for an average party of fewer than 150 people.
2X 250 Watt Speakers
2X 25 Foot 1/4 Inch Jack Speaker Wires
2X Speaker Stands
1 200-300 Watt Powered Mixer
1 stereo mini jack to 1/4 inch output wire
This is a list of the bare essentials other items that you may want are sub speaker "base bin", laser dance floor lighting, mirror ball, light cans, fog etc.

The Art of the DJ
Posted by: | CommentsWhen you are planning a gathering of any sort, the first thing that comes to mind is guest entertainment. A live band is nice if you can find a band that can play a diverse range of musical styles, depending on your tastes. If not then your best bet is a DJ, or disc jockey. If the DJ is for your wedding, no doubt it is the most important decision you could make up until that point. The quality of the DJ can make or break your wedding, so it is important to know what to look for in a quality Wedding DJ.
The first thing I look for in a quality Wedding DJ is where they get their music. These days there are a lot of copyright infringement laws, and DJ's must purchase the rights to play some songs. Some might get them from a downloadable source like ITunes, others might play actual CD's. If you're a little more into the dance aspect and want a true memorable experience, look into a true vinyl DJ. These DJ's play mostly breakbeats on records at a higher tempo which means dancing all night long! These are true artists and true DJ's.
You'll want to make sure the Wedding DJ can play your event successfully. I have known DJ's who use extremely weak and cheap equipment and expect to be able to play larger venues, which is not possible. It is important that their speakers and amp can project the sounds the distance they need to go to be heard and not blow out in the process. Make sure it is the actually owner of the company or somebody who has played a few larger events before booking the DJ. Last but not least, don't spend too much: any DJ charging over 50$ an hour should be a real, true professional beat matching DJ and not just somebody who plays music off their laptop. Because truthfully, anybody can do that right?
If you are planning a wedding and are looking for a Wedding DJ you should check your local listings in the yellow pages for local DJ's. Also the internet is a useful tool for checking local listings or the yellow pages online. Just be mindful of what you want out of your DJ and you certainly can't go wrong.
