Santana Amigos Rock Music CD Review
Posted by: | CommentsNot sure what’s happening with me on this one, but it seems like the more I listen to it, the better Amigos gets. Amigos stated simply is one of Santana’s best CDs to date.
It's a rare day indeed that I get a CD from an artist that I can truthfully say does not have a bad track in the bunch. I'm more than happy to announce that’s exactly what I must say about this one. There simply isn’t a bad one in the bunch. No fillers here at all.
Amigos is a nicely varied, mix of 7 tracks that are very well written songs by this clearly gifted artist. With many of the songs displaying a lot of the kind emotion that makes for a really great listen. Seemingly drawing from what I can only imagine are him own personal experiences. At different points touching on the most real emotions like love, and the pain of failed relationships can certainly be heard.
I’m of the opinion that Amigos is certainly Santana’s best work in a few years. A totally enjoyable CD and an outstanding release. What I call must have music. I give it two thumbs up because it’s a collection that even the casual Rock fan can appreciate and enjoy.
While this entire CD is really very good some of my favorites are track 2 - Take Me With You, track 5 - Tell Me Are You Tired, and track 7 - Let It Shine
My Bonus Pick, and the one that got Sore [...as in "Stuck On REpeat"] is track 1 - Dance Sister Dance. Good stuff!

The Best Creative Ways to Propose
Posted by: | CommentsMarriage proposals made over a romantic dinner at an elegant restaurant can be very romantic but they are not necessarily creative. Many women dream about the day that the man of their dreams proposes to them and hope that the day will be absolutely perfect in every way imaginable. In a recent study the majority of married women reported that they believe that their spouse spent a significant amount of money on their wedding proposal but that the lack of originality in the proposal had left the women feeling disappointed.
One creative way to propose for a couple involved in a long distance relationship is to plan a surprise visit and set up a scavenger hunt. You could have a friend pick you up from the airport so that your girlfriend doesn’t know that you are coming to visit and have the friend give your girlfriend instructions for the scavenger hunt. You could hide a number of small surprises such as candy, flowers and a CD as the first few stops on the scavenger hunt and then hide at the final location poised to propose when your girlfriend completes the game.
An outdoor enthusiast might appreciate a creative proposal during a camping trip. It’s a good idea to plan a quiet trip for just you and your girlfriend at a picturesque location. You could hide the ring in your sleeping bag to use in a surprise proposal. When it’s time to go to sleep after a long day of hiking and fishing, you could complain that there must be a rock or something underneath you and then pull out the ring and make your proposal. This creative proposal also contains the element of surprise as a camping trip is not a usual proposal location.
Another creative proposal idea is to place an ad in a local newspaper. You could place an outrageous ad in a newspaper asking anyone who was willing to get married to give you a call and include a fictitious phone number. Then when you and your girlfriend are reading the paper together, you could point out the ad as a joke and while she is reading the ad, seize the opportunity to pull out the engagement ring and let her know that you would love to marry her.
Proposing at a sporting event is a creative way to propose to a sports fan. For this proposal idea you could either arrange to have your proposal broadcast over the public address system or displayed on the large screen. If you are really adventurous, you could also contact the team’s public relations department and try to make arrangements to make your proposal on the field at halftime. They might be willing to help you stage a scenario where you are either chosen to win a prize or participate in a contest and while you are on the field, they would hand over the microphone to allow you to make your proposal.
Another creative marriage proposal idea is to purchase a book of poems and leave the first few pages intact and carve a heart into the remaining pages and sew the engagement ring to the back of the book. You could suggest taking turns reading the poems on each page and plan to have your girlfriend turn the final complete page to reveal the heart and ring that were hidden inside. This proposal idea is not only creative but also incredibly romantic.
Having the DJ of your girlfriend’s favorite radio program ask her if she will marry you is another creative proposal idea. You will want to make sure that you are aware of the exact time that the DJ will be sending your message so that you are able to ensure that you and your girlfriend are listening together when he makes the announcement. You could also arrange to have the DJ play a song that has a special meaning for you as a couple so that you can enjoy a dance together after she accepts your creative proposal.
Another creative way to propose is to include all of your family and friends in the event by inviting them all to a surprise party for your girlfriend. To make this proposal work, you would either convince your girlfriend that you want to have a quiet dinner at home or at a restaurant with just the two of you. Once you arrive at the destination all of the guests will reveal themselves and while all eyes are on the two of you, you could take the opportunity to profess your love and propose.
Still another creative way to propose is to hide the ring in an unexpected location. For example you could pretend to have a clogged sink and while you are working to fix the clog, you could reach into the sink and pull out the engagement ring. When your girlfriend is nearby, you could seize the opportunity to pull out the ring you had hidden earlier and say something to the effect of, “No wonder the sink is clogged, I’ll have to find another place to store this ring, how about your finger?” This whimsical proposal is both light-hearted and creative.
A variation on the traditional proposal at an elegant restaurant could be to have the waiter bring out the ring with the bill. You could have a little good natured fun with your girlfriend by going out of your way to drop hints that you would be proposing over dinner. If you keep up the act, she will be expecting your proposal with each course. After dessert you could tell her that you have something very important to ask and as she eagerly awaits your proposal, you could ask an inconsequential question about something completely irrelevant to your relationship. She will probably be furious at this point but her anger won’t last as the waiter arrives with the bill and the engagement ring and you let her know how much she means to you.
Finally a creative proposal idea is for the woman to ask the man to marry her, instead of waiting for him to propose. Many women anxiously await the day that the man in their life will propose but why not add your own creative twist by proposing to him instead. The woman is free to propose in any way that she finds truly romantic and can ensure that the proposal is both creative and romantic and that it’s a moment that they both will remember for the rest of their lives.
A great marriage proposal doesn’t have to be expensive or extravagant. Many women are more likely to cherish the memories of a proposal that was inexpensive but truly creative. The creativity is what makes the proposal so memorable and what makes it a great story to tell their friends.

Setting Up a Winamp Shoutcast Server
Posted by: | CommentsSetting up a Shoutcast server can be a tedious adventure if you don't know how. You have to know your WAN IP and a lot of the things that most PC users cringe at the thought of having to do on a computer, but that's not you! You're here to learn this stuff and learn it well! Or at least click buttons until it does something, heh.
If you don't know what WAN IP means I will go into a little detail about that later on. Right now just keep what little sanity you have left from reading the first paragraph and trying to stop your brain from melting, It will all be over soon.
Basic Shoutcast server configuration is usually what most people get caught up on since it can be pretty difficult to get running smoothly. Luckily this guide will get you streaming your favorite music to the masses in no time! Or if you prefer, broadcasting your digital DJ skills to the internet. Some things you will need to have written down or memorized at least will be explained in detail as we go along! So grab a pen or "notepad.exe" if you prefer and lets get started with Winamp Shoutcast Broadcasting!
First things first, do you know your IP address? This is your PC's address on the internet, its a simple string of numbers with 4 sections divided by a period. It will be where people using the internet will connect to to listen in on your Shoutcast Server.
I've gone ahead and got your WAN IP address for you, Your IP is 68.229.252.209
WAN IP stands for Wide Area Network and is how you communicate with other websites and people on the internet. Your WAN IP address I just grabbed for you and just now should be correct but if you are behind a Proxy server then the WAN IP listed above will be no good as it will only show the Proxy which you are connecting through. If you do not know what a Proxy server is then you should be ok. Write down your IP adress and read on.
With IP address in hand and a lot of self esteem Lets go ahead and download the tools we will need to setup and install a Winamp Shoutcast Server. This guide is assuming you do not have Winamp installed or the Shoutcast Server. head over to Winamp.com and download Winamp for free, this link will open in a new window.
Once you have downloaded Winamp you will need the Winamp Shoutcast DSP plugin, once again this link will open in a new window, go there and download the plugin I'll wait. Oh that was fast! I hope you downloaded the right Shoutcast DSP plugin for your version of Winamp, anyway lets move on.
Now its time to download the actual Shoutcast Server that will connect your Winamp to the internet and broadcast your noise loud and clear! Head over to Shoutcast's Download page this link opens in a new window so no worries. Once there click on "be a server" it should be the last link of the three options. Download the Shoutcast Server program where ever you saved Winamp and the Winamp DSP plugin to, hopefully you saved all three files to the same spot. Ok we now have all the tools we need to bump some serious Ludwig van Beethoven beats. Lets install this bad boy or girl.
Install Winamp first, we'll start with the easy stuff then work our way up the ladder to harder configurations. The installation of Winamp should be fairly straight forward and will probably only take a minute to install. Winamp likes to open itself once properly installed to show off its awesomeness so once you see Winamp's main window you should be done installing Winamp. This is my Winamp installed with a custom skin, if your winamp looks different don't worry, I have a custom skin which makes my Winamp program look like this, yours should look similar however. congratulations you have successfully passed the point of no return, read on.
Shoutcast DSP Plugin hard at workNext lets install our nifty little Winamp DSP Plugin I was talking so much about earlier, once again it should be an extremely simple and quick installation, you pretty much just have to hit "OK" for it to install, don't mess with any default settings it might show during installation. The Winamp DSP plugin is what will be creating the bridge between Winamp and your Shoutcast Server allowing any audio which is playing in your Winamp to be miraculously heard by many people despite the distance they are from your PC. Isn't the internet grand? If you don't see the "SHOUTcast Source" window open immediately then you might have to turn it on, go to, Winamp Options Preferences Plug-ins then in the list on the left under Plug-ins click on DSPEffects and you should see your installed plugins listed in the window to the right, highlight "Nullsoft SHOUTcast Source DSP" and your SHOUTcast source screen should pop up instantly.
Oh yea, here's a tiny version of what the Winamp DSP screen looks like!
You don't have to configure anything yet, but trust me, we will be playing with this window more later.
Install the Shoutcast Server program last! Why? Because I don't want to re-write this article if you installed it first! This is what you will use to stream audio from Winamp and its really simple to configure so you're in luck! Install the Winamp Shoutcast server leaving all the default options alone during installation. Once its complete it will pop up the Shoutcast Server "Readme.txt" read the Readme.txt carefully to fully understand how everything works... OK fine, don't "RTFM" I'll just show you how to configure it, happy? Me too!
Configuring the Shoutcast Server GUI
Open the Shoutcast Server GUI (GUI stands for General user Interface or Fancy Window With Buttons to press")
Star menu / Program files / SHOUTcast DNAS / Edit SHOUTcast DNAS configuration
A spiffy text document will pop up called sc_serv.ini, this is the brains of the Shoutcast Server and ultimately controls how the program controlls incoming connections to your audio stream. We only need to change one simple thing in the server configuration file (sc_serv.ini) which is on line 29 which would be the password field which should currently be defaulted to "yourpasswordhere" change the password field from "Password=yourpasswordhere" to whatever you want like "Password=jwpctips" or whatever you want just don't include the " "'s. Once you have thought of a nifty password for your server close the sc_serv.ini making sure to save your changes. Your Shoutcast Server is now configured, lets tell Winamp about this!
Configuring the Nullsoft SHOUTcast Source DSP Plug-in
Go back the SHOUTcast Source window and click on the Output tab. Check "Connect at Startup, enter your WAN IP address ( 68.229.252.209 ) into the "Address field and change the password field to the password you entered in the sc_serv.ini. You might want to check the box next to "Automatic Reconnection on Connection Failure" and set the reconnection time out to 15 second for good measure. This is telling the plugin where your Shoutcast server is located, the password to gain access to your Shoutcast server, and if it disconnects for whatever reason to try to connect again within 15 seconds.
Once you have entered your information into the Output tab click on the "Yellowpages" button. Enter a brief description in the "Description" field telling what your stream is about, an example would be "JW's Rave music online DJ remix" or "JW's radio talkshow". If you do not have a website you would like your listeners to be sent to if they click the title of your stream on the Shoutcast Showcase page then leave the URL blank, if you do have a website you would like to direct your listeners to then enter it in the "URL" field. The Genre field is the type of Shoutcast broadcasting you will be streaming out, examples are Talk, Rap, Country, Rock and Roll.
If you have an AIM or ICQ screen name you can enter them if you want to but its not necessary. Also completely optional is the #IRC, if you don't have an IRC channel then this isn't necessary to change.
You have successfully configured your Winamp Nullsoft DSP plugin! Now lets throw everything together and kick tires!
broadcasting from your New Winamp Shoutcast server
Make sure you have winamp open with the SHOUTcast Source window open, then go to Start menu / Program Files / SHOUTcast DNAS / SHOUTcast DNAS (GUI) your server should pop back up and display a bunch of mumbo jumbo which usually you don't have to pay attention to, its just the server telling you whats vaguely going on behind the scene. Switch back over to Winamp and throw some MP3's on your play list and press play, Your SHOUTcast Source window should connect to your Shoutcast Server and begin streaming whatever you have currently playing in your play list!
Congratulations, you've just installed and configured a Winamp Shoutcast Server and didn't even blink! This is a fairly basic setup which could be fine tuned to allow such things at more listener slots so more internet people can listen to your stream rather then the default 32 limit, but you have to take into consideration how stressful having 200 listeners on your stream can be to your bandwidth. I would say for a basic cable modem a 32 user limit is pretty beefy and having a full server may cause your listener's connection to your stream to become unstable, which is an easy fix to change the limit of listeners, just edit the sc_serv.ini again and search there for "MaxUser=32" and adjust the number to whatever you fell comfortable with.
Things that could possibly go wrong:
If you can't get your Winamp SHOUTcast Source to connect to your Shoutcast server
You might need to double check that you entered your WAN IP address corretly. Also double check your password.
Listeners complain about disconnects or sluggish sound in audio from your stream
Chances are you need to turn down the bitrate of your audio. Go to your SHOUTcast Source / Encoder tab and reduce the Encoder Settings to a lower bitrate such as 24kbps, 22.050kHz Mono

How to Select Meaningful Wedding Songs
Posted by: | CommentsWedding songs can make any wedding a memorable event for the bride and groom as well as the guests. Your wedding might feature a live band, a solo pianist, and/or a DJ. Either way, your musical selections will help set the mood for your special day.
Select wedding songs that reflect your personality and relationship. The wedding songs should be songs you both enjoy and that send a message of your love and passion for one another. The guests at your wedding will likely remember the songs, so choose them wisely. Also, for that special song during the lighting of the unity candle, pick one that has words and music to help relay your desire to make a lifelong commitment to your spouse-to-be.
How Many Wedding Songs will You Need?
The number of songs at your wedding really depends on how the ceremony and reception are conducted. During the actual wedding ceremony, there are usually instrumental songs (with piano, guitar, or violin) for the prelude, processional, recessional, and postlude. You might have one or two soloists to sing special love songs during the ceremony as well.
During the reception, you can have background music as well as special songs for the "cake moment," your first and last dances, the bouquet toss, the garter toss, etc. If you plan to have a lot of music at the reception, it might be a good idea to hire a professional wedding DJ. This will remove a great burden from your shoulders so you can enjoy your reception without worry.
Tip: If your wedding has a certain theme such as Hawaiian, medieval, tropical, Italian or Asian, choose songs to go along with the theme.
The "First Dance" Wedding Song
The song for your first dance should be carefully picked out by you and your spouse-to-be. Choose a song you both enjoy, one with a beat that's not too fast or too slow for both of you. Listen to the lyrics carefully to be sure it is fitting for your wedding. Try to find a song that is meaningful for you both, but not necessarily popular in modern music trends. Once you make a selection, practice dancing to the song again and again so you'll be able to gracefully dance together at the reception.
Restrictions on Wedding Songs
If you plan to hold your wedding ceremony in a church building, be sure to ask what type of wedding music will be allowed. Many churches have strict guidelines as to what type of music they will allow. Some may even restrict "how" the music is played, such as the music must be played on a live instrument and not from a music CD. Ask these questions before selecting your wedding songs and your music methods.
Careful Song Planning
The key to a smooth wedding ceremony and reception is to plan the itinerary and song schedule carefully on paper. Be sure everyone involved with the ceremony and music understands the procedures and when to play certain songs. This is crucial to keep things flowing naturally during every aspect of the wedding.
If you're not sure what songs are available for weddings, you can easily go online to view wedding song lists and even listen to samples. Wedding websites are available that specialize in wedding planning tips and guides, and these usually provide many helpful suggestions. There are hundreds of traditional songs to choose from as well as more modern wedding songs if you prefer to go that route. The main thing to remember is it's "your special day," and you'll want your songs to be as memorable as the wedding itself.

Crosspicking on the Acoustic Guitar in Bluegrass and Old-Time Music
Posted by: | CommentsCrosspicking is a technique in which the flatpick is used to pick a
group of strings in a pattern that repeats. Typically, three
pitches are played repeatedly against a four-pulse rhythm so there
is a continual shifting of the pitches and of the accented pulse.
The result is something similar to a banjo roll, with notes seeming
to come from everywhere. Micky Cochran put it like this: "Crosspicking bombards the listener with a
barrage of notes. As is similar to bluegrass banjo, crosspicking
guitar doesn't seem to pause for a breather. A continuous
succession of notes pours forth establishing the melody while
filling in all of the spaces with harmony notes. Not only does the
guitar support itself, with spaces filled harmonically, but
crosspicking technique works effectively for supporting other lead
instruments and vocals."
George Shuffler, who spent 18 years as a member of the Stanley
Brothers in the 1950's and 1960's, is said to be the pioneer of
crosspicking. The crosspicking technique has been mastered by guitarists like Doc
Watson, Clarence White, Dan Crary, Norman Blake and Tony Rice.
Crosspicking can be used with two open strings against a single
string upon which you are playing melody notes on the frets. You can
throw a crosspicking pattern in here and there, mixing it in with
your other flatpicking techniques.
Let's try a crosspicking exercise. We'll use all open strings for
this, the D, G and B strings. For the strokes, I'll represent the down strokes (the pick motions away from your face) with the letter "d" and the upstrokes (the pick motions toward your
face) with the letter "u." George Shuffler crosspicks with a
pattern of two down strokes followed by one upstroke. Pick each
individual string in this repetitive pattern:
DGB DGB DGB DGB DGB DGB DGB DGB DGB
Play the D string with a down stroke, the G string with a down
stroke, and the B string with an up stroke, like this:
ddu ddu ddu ddu ddu ddu ddu ddu ddu
But remember, crosspicking is a pattern of three pitches played
repeatedly against a four-pulse rhythm, so in common time (4 beats
to the measure, each quarter note receiving one beat), the pattern
would look this when each string picked is a quarter note with four
quarter notes per measure:
DGBD - GBDG - BDGB - DGBD - GBDG - BDGB - DGBG
The picking pattern would be:
ddud - dudd - uddu - ddud - dudd - uddu - ddud
Now let's try something that will probably be a bit challenging. I
learned this from one of Steve Kaufman's instructional videos.
Crosspick the repeated pattern of DGB, but instead of using the
typical "ddu" stroking, play with alternating up and down strokes,
just like if you were picking out a fiddle tune. So, although you
are playing the repeated pattern of the three strings, your stroke
pattern is:
dudu - dudu - dudu - dudu - dudu - dudu - dudu - dudu - dudu
It will not be easy at first to keep the pattern of the three
strings going with the alternating pick motion, but think of your
forearm as a pendulum, swinging down, back and forth, to hit the
top of each string. The upshot of this stroke pattern is that each
note is cleaner, crisper, and makes more of a statement.
I use both of these patterns, but I'm trying to develop the latter
and use it more often, because I think that overall it's the best.
Have fun learning how to crosspick--it's a great weapon to have in
your technique arsenal!

Guitar Lesson – Learn How to Figure Out a Song by Ear
Posted by: | CommentsHave you ever wondered why some guitarists seem to be able to figure out a song "by ear" with ease? This is a skill that anyone can develop, but the guitarist with more experience will develop it faster. Foremost in learning a song by ear is the simple commitment to see the task through to completion. Sit down with your guitar and CD player and determine that you will slowly break the song down and learn it.
Learning the basic guitar chords will put you in a position of strength for figuring out songs by ear. As you develop an understanding of chords, you will come to recognize that the same chord patterns are repeated over and over again in all of the songs you listen to. With experience you'll learn which chords are most often played in combinations together. Also, it will be helpful to learn some basic music theory. Learning scales will be a big plus, too!
Here is another tip: Follow the bass notes in the song you are trying to learn! If the bass note is E, it is most likely the root of the chord. The chord will likely be E major, E 7th or E minor. Learn to listen for the changes--and the timing of the changes. Bite off a little piece at a time and analyze each little segment of the song. If you are willing to commit to this, everything will come together! As you gain more experience learning songs by ear, the process will become much easier for you, and it will take you less time to learn a new song. The more songs you learn, the larger your frame of reference will be for learning the next one you wish to tackle.

The Basics of Speaker Technology
Posted by: | CommentsA Speaker is a device that delivers the air vibrations, which are heard by our ears. Actually, a speaker converts the electric signals into mechanical vibrations or sound that we hear. Magnetism is the base of speaker technology as it works on this principle, the oldest principle of physics for reproducing sound. In fact, the technology of speaker is just the reverse technology of the microphones, which even follows the same principle.
As the principle is old, the technology of the speaker is also an old one. Though many changes have happened regarding the design, quality and the functioning, the basic operating principle is the same as it has been for decades. The only difference that can be noticed is the non-electric permanent magnet made from highly refined metallurgic materials, in place of an electrical field coil used to create the magnetic field used before.
According to the audio system, a magnetic deck reproduces the audio information from the recorded support through an electrical signal. The speaker translates these signals to audio waves, which is almost the same sound as that of the original one. However, there are various components with which a speaker is made up of and thus are the vital part of speaker technology.
Magnet: It produces a steady, non-changing magnetic field. The electro-magnet close to it will either get attracted to it or repel, due to its alternating charge.
Voice-coil: It is the electromagnet made up of a coil of wire that is wrapped around a piece of metal of high conductivity.
Diaphragm: Also referred to as a cone, it is a component that vibrates when the voice coil moves and produces sound waves.
Spider: Called the lower suspension, it is a cloth disc that only allows the voice coil and the bottom of the diaphragm to move backward and forward.
Surround: Called the upper suspension, it is a ring that stops the cone or the diaphragm from moving to the side. Together with the spider, it forms the suspension system for the diaphragm and the voice coil.
Dust cap: It is a cover that is attached to the cone.
Frame: A component that holds all the parts together.
Switching over to the working of the speaker, the components that should be mentioned first are the voice coil and the magnet, Together, these are the base of the whole technology. The wire of the voice coil is insulated with a narrow layer of varnish and the ends of the wire are connected to the terminals on the speaker frame with the help of tinsel leads. These wires are very flexible pieces of braided wire that allows electricity to pass.
However, as the electricity flows through the wire of the voice coil, it sets up a magnetic field around itself and this magnetic field interacts with the magnetic field of the magnet. The closeness to the magnet causes the voice coil to move up and down. Now, if the charges are identical they will repel but if they are not then they will attract. That means that either it will draw the speaker down towards the magnet or will push it away.
As the voice coil starts moving, the diaphragm or the cone, which is attached to the top of the moving voice coil, also starts moving up and down. And this way the sound waves are generated from the electric impulses.

Summer Wedding: Garden Party Theme
Posted by: | CommentsTake love to the outdoors! Why have a bunch of loved ones sit in a hot stuffy room when you can be out embracing the warm summer weather? This is where the garden party theme comes into play for your wedding ideas. Where can you have a garden party? A private park, a beautiful yacht club, or the yard of your own home.
What does it take to pull off a successful garden party? Patience! Start planning your wedding decorations and preparations in advance. Who have you invited to the wedding? The young and elderly need a lot of shade on very hot days. Make sure that you have shady trees or large umbrellas to protect them from the hot sun. On that note, it’s important to emphasize sunscreen for all! You want everyone to have wonderful stories to tell for years! Not stories of the most painful sunburn of 2006.
It’s not very difficult to emphasize nature in a pastoral setting. Prepare tiki torches and electrical multi-colored lights if the party will extend into the late hours. Citronella candles will keep biting insects at bay while providing extra light.
Set up a Gazebo for foods and desserts. Everyone will form a line and serve themselves. Prepare garden salads, fruits, vegetables, floral cakes, and plenty of cold salads. Make sure you have plenty of chairs and tables for your guests to sit in. You can decorate the area with flowers pots, faux bumble bees, small summer statues that emit water, and ivy.
Play relaxing music throughout the day and pull out the real dancing music after supper. Encourage women to take of their high heels and have a good time. Encourage men to loosen their ties and live a little. You want everyone to have a great time in a lively atmosphere. Make sure your music is appropriate for everyone. While younger people like the popular hits on the radio, older people may enjoy a blast from the past. If you hire a DJ, make sure they do requests.
A garden theme party, is exactly as it sounds. It’s a summer wedding that embraces life, nature, and everything beautiful in this world. Make sure you hold your party in a desirable safe location for children to wander and play free from harm. If there’s a lake or pond, make sure that an older child never leaves little ones unattended. If everyone has a responsibility, your summer wedding party is sure to be a smash!

A Djembe Drum For Christmas – Our Best Christmas in Africa
Posted by: | CommentsThe Christmas we spent in Africa is still the most awesome imaginable; not just because it was so different in every possible way from every other Christmas of our lives, but because of the soundscape of the place and time. That year, 1981, my partner & I were teaching at a catholic high school on Sherbro Island, West Africa, in a leftover British relic of an African town called Bonthe. aka CHRISTMAS ISLAND. That's what everybody called Bonthe. Mostly because even though it was now a backwater town floating somehow between a huge river delta and a swamp; it had once been a grand British colony, where everybody travelled to for the Christmas holiday party scene.
The British and all their gleened out of Africa wealth, had been gone for decades by the time we arrived, but somehow, at Christmas, a bit of the old hey day returned: the sketchy electricity stayed on a little longer, there was actually food to eat and the incredible miracle of ice cold drinks with ice cold ice in icy cold bottles appeared on every corner. People got all happy even though the agony of crushing poverty still beat out its' relentless bell toll of death every day. By the time Christmas arrived, we had pretty much given up on our Canadian born natural cheerfulness.
In our first 4 months there, we had seen so much unthinkable cruelty, that we come to think that any expression of happiness or joy would be just rude and mean. But when it comes to attitude, the African people were just so far ahead of any of us poomwii (Sierra Leonian name for white folk), they really know how to push away sorrow & just get right into celebrating right away, when happiness returns, even knowing that the next devastating loss in just around the corner. In Bonthe, at Christmas time, the partying, the dancing, the feasting, the drumming all got ramped right up to over the top and African laughter ringing out everywhere that wailing & crying & screaming had been just the day before. One day, I actually did ask one of our fellow teachers, who was Sierra Leonian, how everyone in Bonthe could suddenly become so happy and so fiercely jubilant in the midst of all their dreadful problems.
She said " Well, in Bonthe, sometimes you just have to pretend to be happy because if you wait for it to be actual, then there will be NO chance for it at all." So, that made no sense at all, to our young highly educated minds, but it struck a note somewhere in our psyche, that we would always remember, though decades would pass before we understood those words. It will not be anything I could explain to you either, but someday you'll be able to see it and your gratitude will explode like a whole village of African drummers. The partying was fantastic, drumming, amped up dance music and libations until dawn every night.
The drums just seemed to arrive more & more each day. Everybody started drumming on everything. Old wooden boxes, plastic tubs, each other, the ground, the calabash wine vessels, the shells & bones & tin waste cans all became tuned up, cranked up drums. No ego elitist drummers here in Bonthe. The soundscape produced by these events were right out of reality. How can the drum music, produced on a couple of hundred bits of flotsum & trash, sound so powerful? It is just IN the heart and soul and hands and feet of the spectacular African people. They just really know how to 'bring it' like no other people on earth. They bring it to the drumming, bring it to the dancing, bring it to the sorrow and then BRING IT TO THE JOY. On that African island, there was no conflict between joy and sorrow.
What a gift! To be able to feel joy, right at the same moment as sorrow, means that sorrow can not ,and does not, prevent happiness. In a world so rife with misery and devastation, this way of looking at life could truly be the only way to go through it happily with your laugh, your love and your dance intact. Give it a try this Christmas as we all face what WE consider hard times. Remember: Sometimes you just have to pretend to be happy and then see what happens next. Here's to everyone who still can manage a smile to uplift their friends, family and neighbors this holiday season. Peace on earth. Good will to all. Everybody DRUM now.
