Guitar Playing – What About Performing

Posted by: | Comments Comments Off
dj

One great way to create motivation to practice on your guitar is to perform in front of other people in different ways. Do you like to perform in front of others? Let's see how to enjoy performing and also give other people enjoyment!

Performing really doesn't need to be so formal!

A way to create momentum to practise your guitar repertoire is to set up an informal concert with a couple of pieces in the setting of your own home.

The members of your own family could be the public.

There are many occasions when you can perform and play your music in the home and maybe you will also encourage others in your family or among your friends to play on their instruments in such a setting.

Of course you have to plan ahead in order to suggest a performance and in order to prepare yourself.

But if you don't like to perform?

You can actually practice the art of performing on your guitar without people present. One way is to use your imagination and pretend that you perform in front of others.

If you want to help your imagination a bit you can put empty chairs in front of you representing the audience. One step further is to put your children's teddies on the chairs.

On such an occasion you have to exercise self discipline and play those pieces in your actual program from beginning to end. If you would make a mistake in front of a public, what would you do?

Probably you would want to minimize the effect of this mistake and just play on. This is what you have to practice even in this relaxed setting.

What will happen is that you create self confidence in your ability to handle mistakes and you will also find weaknesses you can improve upon in your guitar playing.

This is also an excellent time to record your performance for later evaluation.

Don't make this recording thing to complicated. In these days with cell phones and mp3 players it's an easy task to accomplish.

The act of recording is like having a critic in the public.

Listening to other artists recordings will also be of great benefit.

You have to look upwards in order to climb to a higher level in your guitar playing and this will be accomplished by listening to guitar players on a higher artistic level than yourself.

When you practice and memorize your guitar pieces or songs remember to always play your music at the same artistic level as when you perform.

As you memorize your music you will also memorize your attitude, posture and your tension level.

The joy you feel when you practice will probably be present when you perform the piece of music in front of public and will also reach your audience.

The Christmas we spent in Africa is still the most awesome imaginable; not just because it was so different in every possible way from every other Christmas of our lives, but because of the soundscape of the place and time. That year, 1981, my partner & I were teaching at a catholic high school on Sherbro Island, West Africa, in a leftover British relic of an African town called Bonthe. aka CHRISTMAS ISLAND. That's what everybody called Bonthe. Mostly because even though it was now a backwater town floating somehow between a huge river delta and a swamp; it had once been a grand British colony, where everybody travelled to for the Christmas holiday party scene.

The British and all their gleened out of Africa wealth, had been gone for decades by the time we arrived, but somehow, at Christmas, a bit of the old hey day returned: the sketchy electricity stayed on a little longer, there was actually food to eat and the incredible miracle of ice cold drinks with ice cold ice in icy cold bottles appeared on every corner. People got all happy even though the agony of crushing poverty still beat out its' relentless bell toll of death every day. By the time Christmas arrived, we had pretty much given up on our Canadian born natural cheerfulness.

In our first 4 months there, we had seen so much unthinkable cruelty, that we come to think that any expression of happiness or joy would be just rude and mean. But when it comes to attitude, the African people were just so far ahead of any of us poomwii (Sierra Leonian name for white folk), they really know how to push away sorrow & just get right into celebrating right away, when happiness returns, even knowing that the next devastating loss in just around the corner. In Bonthe, at Christmas time, the partying, the dancing, the feasting, the drumming all got ramped right up to over the top and African laughter ringing out everywhere that wailing & crying & screaming had been just the day before. One day, I actually did ask one of our fellow teachers, who was Sierra Leonian, how everyone in Bonthe could suddenly become so happy and so fiercely jubilant in the midst of all their dreadful problems.

She said " Well, in Bonthe, sometimes you just have to pretend to be happy because if you wait for it to be actual, then there will be NO chance for it at all." So, that made no sense at all, to our young highly educated minds, but it struck a note somewhere in our psyche, that we would always remember, though decades would pass before we understood those words. It will not be anything I could explain to you either, but someday you'll be able to see it and your gratitude will explode like a whole village of African drummers. The partying was fantastic, drumming, amped up dance music and libations until dawn every night.

The drums just seemed to arrive more & more each day. Everybody started drumming on everything. Old wooden boxes, plastic tubs, each other, the ground, the calabash wine vessels, the shells & bones & tin waste cans all became tuned up, cranked up drums. No ego elitist drummers here in Bonthe. The soundscape produced by these events were right out of reality. How can the drum music, produced on a couple of hundred bits of flotsum & trash, sound so powerful? It is just IN the heart and soul and hands and feet of the spectacular African people. They just really know how to 'bring it' like no other people on earth. They bring it to the drumming, bring it to the dancing, bring it to the sorrow and then BRING IT TO THE JOY. On that African island, there was no conflict between joy and sorrow.

What a gift! To be able to feel joy, right at the same moment as sorrow, means that sorrow can not ,and does not, prevent happiness. In a world so rife with misery and devastation, this way of looking at life could truly be the only way to go through it happily with your laugh, your love and your dance intact. Give it a try this Christmas as we all face what WE consider hard times. Remember: Sometimes you just have to pretend to be happy and then see what happens next. Here's to everyone who still can manage a smile to uplift their friends, family and neighbors this holiday season. Peace on earth. Good will to all. Everybody DRUM now.

Cohesive Works Created Through Film and Video Editing

Posted by: | Comments Comments Off
dj

Films are created by combining a number of different aspects together to create a singular coherent work of art. The subject of editing is one of the least talked about aspects of film production. It is an editor's job to take stock or "raw" footage and place corresponding shots in a timeline that work together to tell a story to the audience. The editor will take the shots chosen by either themselves or a director and place them together with other shots to create a sequence. The subsequent sequences are then combined together to create the entire film.

Editors use their skills to manipulate emotional responses from the audience depending on what shots they choose and how those particular shots are arranged. Editing is not just about cutting and splicing sections of film together; editors are entrusted with the responsibility of bringing all the outside facets of the film making process together. They are responsible for making sure audio matches up with video; they are also responsible for making sure that the score accompanies the correct video onscreen. Pacing and rhythm are two other factors that an editor must take into consideration. Editors are also responsible for making sure the film progresses forward in the most logical way possible.

If film and video editing sounds like an interesting job, there are a few things you must remember and learn before you take your first steps into the field:

The first thing to remember before you embark on your film and video editing career is key training. Across the country there are a number of schools and universities that have curriculums which center on film and video editing techniques and skills. These courses are intended to teach students the proper usage and application of a number of different digital video editing programs. They will also teach you what it means to create a coherent story that can be followed easily by the audience viewing your film.

The next thing to remember is to make professional business connections. Broadcasting, whether it is in film, television or radio is all about who you know. It's difficult to make a name for yourself in any professional field, and it's especially true in the field of broadcasting. Due to the fact that film and video editing jobs rely heavily on the principles of what you know and how well you can adapt to new programs and techniques, entry level jobs are few and far between. Television stations do not offer on-the-job training for their film and video editors; therefore, you are expected to show up on your first day and know what needs to be done and which is the best course to reach those goals.

The final piece of advice for anyone who feels that film and video editing is a job well suited for them is to not be afraid to experiment with new techniques. If all editors followed the same cookie cutter pattern for creating a film, the industry would never evolve. It is important to take risks at times and try to incorporate the technology and your own skill in ways which have not been done before.

Film and video editing is a fast paced, exciting career that has much to offer those highly skilled and determined individuals throughout the field. If this still sounds like a profession you would be interested in learning more about, you can find out available courses and programs through your local colleges and universities.

Inside a Limo

Posted by: | Comments Comments Off
dj

Every limousine is different, both inside and out. Different types of limousines (i.e. 4x4 limo or traditional shape), different models (e.g. Chrysler C300 Baby Bentley limousine or Hummer H2 limousine), different capacities and different interiors. For a lot of potential customers the interior of their chosen limousine is a lot more important than what it looks like on the outside. This could be due to a themed party or occasion such as a hen night requiring the interior to be pink even though the limo may be white. It could be that karaoke is needed, a DVD player or plasma TV or even just a CD player is required. Whatever the reason the interior of a limousine plays a big part in deciding which limo to hire.

Many limousines particularly in limo hire London and the Midlands area have lavish and luxurious interiors with stylish leather seating, mirrored ceilings and fibre optic lights. An exceptional few have lots of added extras such as Playstations, flat screen TV's, surround sound systems, smoke machines, bubble machines and karaoke. Some such as the triple axle H2 Hummer has an onboard DJ complete with decks. All this is topped off with complimentary bubbly and the amounts given varies greatly and could be anything from two bottles up to six.

The amount of extras in a imousine depends on its size. Many of the traditional stretch Lincoln Town Cars do not have the space to fit surround sound systems and smoke machines in them, though a few do contain karaoke. The bigger limousines such as the H2 Hummer limos do have the room and a lot of limousine companies exploit this by filling the limo with all the mod cons and gadgets you can think of. possibly the best interior of any chauffeur driven vehicle has to be the party bus limos. Because of their size some party buses have special "dens" such as the Playboy Den and Poker Den, the latter complete with poker chips and playing cards. In addition they may have on tap bars where you can buy your favourite drink, a dance pole as well as smoke machines and bubble machines.

The way the interior of a limousine is presented does depend on the limousine company. The vast majority of limousine operators will adhere to customer requests such as balloons and banners for a birthday or hen night and even personalise the limo with the birthday boy or girls name. This will also mean that if a pink limo is not available and the only limo that is happens to be white, the operator may go out of their way to ensure that the inside is as pink as possible. This will probably involve pink balloons, pink banners, pink chocolates, pink flowers and even pink champagne. As with any industry there are those limousine companies that cut corners and provide sub standard limousines. This is particularly true of older shape Lincoln Town Car limos with many hired out in a poor condition. Before the limo is hired make sure you get to view pictures of the interior of the limousine to judge its condition.

Piano Lesson – How To Practice For People

Posted by: | Comments Comments Off
dj

Have you ever thought about practicing in order to prepare to play in front of other people. What would you practice if you knew that you would play piano to an audience? Let us take a look at the people oriented way of practicing on your piano!

What will constitute a pleasant and musical experience when you hear a pianist play? The outcome probably depends on the person you ask but personally I think that these things at least influence my feelings:

1. The musical content of the performance. The way the pianist conveys the composer's and his own feelings in the piece of music.

2. The agility of the performer. Is the pianist playing with ease showing that he or she has mastered the piece of music and can convey self confidence that makes me feel at ease.

3. The ****** expression of the performer. Is he happy, tense, enjoying his playing?

4. Is the performer relaxed? If he is tense I will probably not be able to relax and will not be enjoying the performance the way I could have.

If you want to become a pianist that performs piano music in a musical way, that plays with agility and self confidence, that can smile or express feelings with ****** expressions and relax while performing at peak level you also know how to practice.

Here are some tips to help you become a better piano performer:

Build a small or big repertoire with piano pieces that you are prepared to play in front of other people. The amount of pieces in your repertoire depends on the practice time at your disposal. The important thing is to really commit the pieces you choose to your long term memory.

As you practice the musical passages of a piece of music remember to practice the way you would like to play the piece in front of an audience. This means:

1. Create music as you practice. To convey the composers musical ideas in your playing is not something that should be spared until you perform the piece in front of an audience. As you practice the various musical passages that will eventually become a piece of music that you have mastered it is a good thing to practice both to play the notes accurately but also to practice the musical interpretation. Everything you practice or not practice will have an impact on your actual public performance.

2. Relax as you play. It is not easy to relax in front of other people as you are trying to play a piece of music if you have not practiced the piano composition in this manner. The art of relaxing your body is something you also can practice away from the piano. When you practice your piece of piano music at the initial stages it is important to play slowly enough to have control of the tension level in your hands, arms and the rest of your body.

3. Enjoy you playing and let your face enforce the music. Hopefully you have positive feelings towards the music you play, otherwise it might be a good idea to choose other music to play, if you have the option, that will give you a fair chance to play with a positive attitude. In a performing situation your ****** expressions will influence the listening experience for the audience. This makes for involving you ****** expressions in your piano practicing sessions as well.

The conclusion is that things connected with your piano practicing probably will be evoked as you play in front of an audience. You can use your piano practice sessions to practice joy, self confidence, relaxation and a happy face at the same time as you practice becoming a great pianist!

Where to Download Music for Zune for Pennies

Posted by: | Comments Comments Off
dj

Are you a Zune owner and wish that you know where to download music conveniently, instantly and most importantly without expensive pay per download fees? You may be looking for the latest songs by Beyonce, Maroon 5 or Justin Timberlake but the thought of the cost makes it a little hard to bear. If this describes you, then you may want to read on as we share about how you can pack more music to your player and where are the best places to download music for Zune.

HMV, Amazon and iTunes are some mega online stores where you can download music together with other media files like videos, music videos and movies. Microsoft also has a marketplace where you can find a huge library of over 2 million music files. But buying at these music stores is not the cheapest thing to do. Downloading one or a few music or songs is perfectly fine for your pocket as each download costs around $0.99 onwards. But you would feel the pinch if you were trying to build a private collection.

Of course another option is to head to some of the free music networks where you can download music for Zune for free. While this sounds like a great idea, I can almost assure you that you may regret it like some others. Be prepared to open your computer to the risk of spyware, adware and viruses. Trojans, worms and all are but common files that are attached to the music download. Not only that, the copies might not be the full complete songs!

Another way is to go the route of CD ripping. Either you rip your own CD for songs or you can always pop by a friend's place for a CD you like. Since the Zune player is no different from other MP3 players, you might already be familiar with how to rip music from CD to your player especially if you own one MP3 player like iPod or Zen currently.

Ripping music for your Zune player requires a media player like Windows Media Player. There are others like Winamp, RealPlayer and so on. If you are using Windows Media Player, once the CD is loaded into your CD ROM, you can see the song list from which you can select the tracks you want. Then all you have to do is to right click the mouse and go to "rip" or simply just click the "Rip" icon on the interface. Once it is done, wire the player to your computer via the USB cable and synchronization between your player and your PC takes place. It will download music onto your player.

Sometimes, the synchronization may be interrupted and the files are not downloaded properly. When this happens, all you need is to copy the music downloads and paste it directly onto your music player. Your player would appear as a removable drive, typically Drive E on your computer when you explore it.

The file format for music is crucial if you wish to successfully download music for Zune playback. The reason why we encourage users to use Windows Media Player is so that the files are compatible with your device since it supports them. If you are using a different media player, make sure you can save the files as one of these formats - WMA, WMV, MP3, MP4 and MOV. DivX and RealMedia are not supported.

Other than the free sites as well as music CD ripping, you do have a third option which is a favourite among current owners. This alternative comes in the form of paid membership services where you can have unlimited access as well as movies, videos, games and even the latest software. All these are available without any bandwidth limits at a price lesser than $49 which is something even teens can afford.

Hopefully, these tips would help you to decide your choice for music downloads. For more details about the top download sites that allow you instant access to download music for Zune, go over to my recommended blog

Learn how you can get access to unlimited Zune downloads - quality and latest music, movies, videos and games for your Zune player instantly. Also, find out if there really are free unlimited Zune downloads?

How to Record a Demo and Market Yourself

Posted by: | Comments Comments Off
dj

One of the first thing you will ever need to market your self or your band, is a 3 song demo CD. Most venues don't even look at you if you haven't got anything to show for.

Creating a demo on a tight poor musicians budget can be a problem, however, whatever you do, don't skimp too much. It doesn't have to be a perfectly produced sound, but it has to represent you in such a way that you can hand it over with confidence, not with embarrassment.

Cheap home recording, may give you something as a reference for yourself, but it may backfire if you try to use it to get a venue, manager or label interested.

The best option is to check around at different studios and see if they have any deals on recording demos. Just make sure that you and any other musicians have the material perfected before going into the studio. Studios who have no packages work on an hourly rate, (usually between $50 and $120) and it can get very expensive if you don't have it together, so literally "time is money." For those new to recording, here are a few tips to help keep your productivity up during a session.

1.Be 100% sure on which songs you are going to record.

2.Have all the lyrics and music sections written out, as to avoid confusion.

3.Take lots of food and drinks.

4.Be prepared to do a lot of sitting around, waiting for each person to record their own part.

90% of the time, with a band, the studio engineer will record the drums and bass first, then the guitar parts, followed by the keys and voices. Other sounds can be at any point. Don't assume that mistakes will be fixed in the mix down stage, even though it is quite possible, to a degree. The best sound will come from the source, this being you.

Take this experience very seriously, but don't forget to have a fun and relaxed recording session. Your first time in a professional recording studio could be one of the most memorable moments in your life. It was for me! Enjoy it!

Now comes the task of marketing. First you need a press kit that you can use to market yourself to people in your target industry, different performing venues, etc. A press kit consists of the following:

1. Several promotional photos.

2. A bio/fact sheet.

3. A three song demo of your music. - probably the most important

4. Your contact information, including your website address.

5. Any press you've received from newspapers, websites, etc.

It will of course take some time to get these things together, and make it look good.

Next, use your press kit, and approach the venues where you would like to play. Start with an area where you live, than widen the area, depending on how far you want to travel.

Lets sum up a bit. Now you have a press kit, including the demo, some gigs and some reviews. Make that into a whole new packaged press kit,and try to send it to your local radio station.

While you're waiting to hear back from the radio stations, get busy creating a web-site, also social networking sites such as MySpace are a must!

I would recommend setting up a website with pictures, some samples of your music, and a bio (basically an online press kit). You can start with a free website, or do this by creating a profile on some of the music websites who offer free Artist listings. On your website, make sure you have a calendar with upcoming gigs, and a sign in list for your fans. Offer a way for them to purchase your CD's, or purchase digital downloads of your music. This will also allow you to get more money to produce a better CD.

Build your fan base, if you can fill a venue, venues will take you back, and you have a better chance of getting noticed.

While you're getting some attention online, start searching for managers to represent you. It's nice to have someone who is well-connected in the industry who can shop your material to record companies.

At your performances, you can also promote your website and sell CD's once they are finished.

Try to enter band or songwriting competitions. These will get you direct exposure with the industry who often are contest judges. You will also be able to get press more easily if you do well in these contests.

If you do all of this, it should give you the opportunity to get lots of exposure and meet people who could help you further your career.

Yes Tormato Rock Music CD Review

dj

The exceptionally talented Rock group Yes have released their CD entitled Tormato. I am very confident and happy to announce that I believe Yes fans, and Rock fans alike will be pleased with this one. With the release of Tormato their artistic excellence is on full display as they have once again delivered a brilliant collection of tracks that could very well be their best work to date.

It's a rare day indeed that I get a CD from an artist that I can truthfully say does not have a bad track in the bunch. I'm more than happy to announce that’s exactly what I must say about this one. There simply is NOT a bad one in the bunch. No fillers here at all.

The nice thing about a CD like this is with this level of talent even if Rock isn’t your favorite style you still can’t help but appreciate the greatness of the musicians.

Listen and I think you’ll agree that the song choices are excellent, the production is outstanding and Yes is clearly a group that is in top form.

While the entire CD is outstanding the truly standout tunes are track 3 - Don’t Kill The Whale, track 9 - On The Silent Wings Of Freedom, and track 18 - Everybody’s Song.

Ah, the power of love! Your heart beats faster, your eyes open wider, and you're much more likely to listen to a love song. Each February 14, and during the weeks leading up to Valentine's Day, the musical choices of the nation turn more romantic.

Over the years, some wonderfully potent love songs have been recorded. In fact, the most difficult part of writing this article was trimming the list down to just ten tunes.

So, if you don't find your favorite love song here, send me an e-mail at scott@gmanmusic.com and let me know your desires on the subject. Meanwhile, you might want to visit www.romantic-lyrics.com or www.theromantic.com for a large selection of songs, often with the complete lyrics.

But right now, sit back, relax, pop a chocolate bon-bon in your mouth, and read some surprising facts about the Top Ten Love Songs for Valentine's Day (in chronological order):

"Someone to Watch Over Me," George and Ira Gershwin, 1926.

The birthplace of this lovely and moody number was an otherwise light and frothy Broadway musical called "Oh, Kay." The song was originally fast-paced, but soon moved to the ballad form, in keeping with the lyrics. There have been evocative renditions of the song every year since it was first composed, with a wide variety of artists contributing notable versions, including Rosemary Clooney, Doris Day, Judy Garland, Ella Fitzgerald, Frank Sinatra, Elton John, rapper Queen Latifah (although hers is not a rap version), trumpeter Chris Botti, pianist Keith Jarrett, blues legend Etta James, Barbra Streisand, and Sting, who sang it over the opening credits of the 1987 Ridley Scott film of the same name.

"Night and Day," by Cole Porter, 1932.

Written for the play, "Gay Divorce," and also appearing in the film, "The *** Divorcee," this may be the most famous of Porter's 800+ songs, and illustrates his seemingly effortless flow of words, culminating in the bold statement that all of life's torments won't end "Till you let me spend my life making love to you, day and night, night and day." Such is the economy of Porter's writing that this one phrase combines the singer's desire with a promise of eternal love while managing to invert and restate the title, all in 17 words. It's why many songwriters would want to say to Porter, "You're the Top," which is another of his famous songs, and would have made this list if it wasn't also so full of humor.

"Unchained Melody," Alex North and Hy Zaret, 1936.

William Stirrat was 16 and too shy to approach the girl of his dreams, so he wrote one of the world's most beautiful tales of love and longing (using Zaret as his pen name). The breathtaking melody was by Alex North (who went on to compose scores for "Spartacus," "Cleopatra," and many other films). It took 19 years before their song appeared in the prison picture, "Unchained," where it was nominated for a Best Song Oscar. Al Hibbler sang it in the film, but that same year saw the song hit the charts in versions by Hibbler, Les Baxter, Roy Hamilton, and June Valli. Among the nearly 700 artists who have recorded this song are Harry Belafonte, Liberace, Jimmy Young, U2, Leann Rimes, Neil Diamond, Willie Nelson, Heart, Elvis Presley, and, of course, the Righteous Brothers. Their 1965 recording was a huge hit, and reached the top twenty again a quarter century later when it appeared on the "Ghost" soundtrack in 1990. The duo re-recorded the song the same year and THAT version also hit the top twenty.

"First Time Ever I Saw Your Face," by Ewan MacColl, 1957.

A long, slowly-building flame is how some people describe the version sung by Roberta Flack, which created a sensation when it appeared in Clint Eastwood's 1971 directorial debut, "Play Misty for Me." Experimental playwright and folk singer MacColl wrote it 14 years earlier for his partner, Peggy Seeger, who needed a romantic song for a play. Written in less than an hour, the song virtually defines the term "love song." Flack's is the definitive rendition, but the song has been recorded by dozens of performers in many genres, including Johnny Cash, Celine Dion, Elvis Presley, Mel Torme, Isaac Hayes, Gordon Lightfoot, and George Michael.

"Cherish," by Terry Kirkman, 1966.

Kirkman reportedly wrote this lovely song in a half-hour while he was the keyboard player in the overlooked Los Angeles-based band The Association. Featuring wonderfully expressive vocal harmonies, the song is actually about unrequited love, but its feeling of desire is so strong that this tune still gets played at weddings and anniversary parties. Some Internet sites explain that the recording was nearly three and a half minutes long, which was a bit much for radio play in those days, so the song was sped up to 3:13 but listed on the label as 3:00. It later became the first hit for David Cassidy, star of TV's "The Partridge Family," but that shouldn't dissuade you from checking out the original.

"God Only Knows," by Brian Wilson, 1966.

Although it begins with the line, "I may not always love you," the rest of the song is as assertive about undying love as anything ever written. In the recording by the Beach Boys, Carl Wilson's lead vocal achieves a rarified combination of strength and tenderness and the entire track is ethereal in its beauty. Cover versions of the song appear in the films "Boogie Nights" and "Saved," while the original is at the end of the charming Richard Curtis film, "Love, Actually."

"Your Song," by Elton John and Bernie Taupin, 1967.

It is said that the original lyric sheet has coffee stains on it because Taupin wrote the song at breakfast one morning at the home of John's parents, where he and the soon-to-be-superstar artist were living. While some mistakenly think this was the first John/Taupin collaboration, it was one of their earliest works. John reportedly wrote the melody in 20 minutes. The song perfectly captures the sense of wonder experienced by anyone who has fallen in love.

"I Will Always Love You," by Dolly Parton, 1974.

When Dolly Parton ended her professional songwriting relationship with Porter Wagoner, she wrote this heartfelt breakup song even though they were not romantically involved. The result was a number one country hit for Parton. She recorded another version for the 1978 film, "The Best Little Whorehouse in Texas," and again hit number one on the country charts. Whitney Houston's version of the song appeared in the 1992 film, "The Bodyguard," and dominated the pop, soul and adult contemporary charts for weeks. Not a day goes by without someone playing it to demonstrate the depth of their love, which is ironic since it is a song about saying goodbye.

"Heaven," by Jim Vallance and Bryan Adams, 1983.

Written for the thankfully forgotten 1983 film "A Night in Heaven," the song also appeared on Adams' "Reckless" album the following year and hit number one. Today, a whole new generation knows the song from DJ Sammy's 2002 dance version, which was recorded with Yanou and features vocals by Do (Dominique van Hulst). This modern, rhythmic version, which has dance floor clout yet still conveys the swirling all-encompassing passion of love, now appears in more than a dozen different remixes and has charted in nearly two dozen countries.

"In Your Eyes," by Peter Gabriel, 1986.

This track from Gabriel's "So" album has been called the most beautiful love song ever recorded. There's no denying its passion and power, with unusual chords and lyrics that touch on spiritual and metaphysical themes. Film director Cameron Crowe worked hard (and reportedly paid two hundred thousand dollars) to get the song into his film, "Say Anything" (in the scene where John Cusack holds a boom box over his head). Another popular story about the song is that it was written for Gabriel's then girlfriend, Rosanna Arquette. If true, it would mean she had two hit songs written for her that decade, as she is the subject of Toto's "Rosanna" from 1982.

Did You Bang Your Head at the Soundhouse?

For those who may recall or perhaps are just curious, The Soundhouse was the headquarters for listening to and promoting the New Wave of British Heavy Metal music. It was a venue in London that provided a place for devotees to listen to the best in hard rock and emerging bands and sounds.

The Soundhouse was located in several different pubs through its history, but began in the Prince of Wales pub in London in the mid 1970s. The popularity of the Soundhouse really took off when Neal Kay was hired to be the DJ at the popular night spot. Kay had a dynamic style of showmanship, which he used to promote the bands and sounds of the New Wave of British Heavy Metal.

If you wanted to hear the latest NWOBHM band, you drank beer and played air guitar at the Soundhouse. Neal Kay was the Soundhouse's DJ for early shows of such British metal greats as Angel Witch, Praying Mantis, and Iron Maiden. More established heavy metal bands such as Judas Priest and Motorhead performed at the Soundhouse as well.

Eventually Neal Kay's style and promotion expertise caused the Soundhouse experience to spread outside of its Kingsbury, London neighborhood. The "Heavy Metal Crusade" tour was formed, and featured bands like Iron Maiden and Saxon in many different venues in London, spreading the sound of NWOBHM around London to gain more fans. Unfortunately, the Soundhouse had a disagreement with its main venue's brewery. This led the Soundhouse to move to several new homes, namely the Headstone, the Queen Ann Arms, the Clay Pigeon, and the Royal Standard, all of which were pubs.

The last official night of Soundhouse was in 1992 at the pub the Clay Pigeon in Eastcote, England. Revivals of Soundhouse nights began, led by Neal Kay, and were held in the Raynor pub. These performances began in 2000 and continued until 2006, when Soundhouse once again lost its place to perform.
