Henry Rollins – Punk Rock’s Renaissance Man

Henry Rollins, born Henry Lawrence Garfield on February 13, 1961, first came to public attention as the new frontman for ******** punk band Black Flag in 1981. His first recording with the band was the seminal 'Damaged', an album that continues to influence ******** bands to this day. Unlike most of their peers, Black Flag were always trying to push the envelope of their music, incorporating influences from jazz, metal and contemporary classical music but an unforgivable faux pas for the punk rock elite. Thus, as the music evolved and slowed down, Black Flag started to turn away a considerable contingent of their original fan base, but later releases, such as 1984's 'My War' would go on to influence groundbreaking bands like Mudhoney and Nirvana.
After the break-up of Black Flag in 1986, Rollins went on to front his own Rollins Band, slowly becoming an alternative music icon as he was pushed further into the spotlight. The Rollins Band was eventually signed to DreamWorks and their 1994 release 'Weight' spawned two international hits, "Liar" and "Disconnect", both of which received considerable airplay on MTV. The band continued to record and tour until it dissolved in 2001, leaving Henry to concentrate more on his spoken-word career and writing.
As a spoken-word artist Rollins regales audiences with his experiences travelling around the world, socio-political musings and anecdotes from his time in bands in a lucid style reminiscent of Lenny Bruce and Bill Hicks. It is far removed from normal stand-up comedy about relationships, shoes and lampshades, and an average Henry Rollins spoken-word performance lasts about two and a half to three hours. While Henry was doing spoken-word performances - even while in Black Flag - his best material has been in the last 10 years and has given him a loyal fanbase around the world.
As a writer, Henry is best known for his tour diaries, the Black Coffee Blues trilogy and 'Get in the Van: On the Road with Black Flag'. Written in locations as diverse as hotels in London to the jungles of Africa, it provides insight into the world of the touring musician and the highs and lows that come with commercial success and failure. An abridged audiobook reading of 'Get in the Van' was awarded a Grammy in 1995.
Henry continues to tour for about 9 months of every year, and was last in Britain this summer, which included four sold-out performances during the Edinburgh Fringe Festival. He is due to return to these shores early next year, doing 8 dates across the UK and Ireland in January and February, proving that even after over a quarter of a century on stage, punk rock's renaissance man isn't slowing down just yet.

Consider a buffet dinner - it's less expensive than a sit down dinner.

Most big decisions at most big parties ultimately come down to money. From how many guests to invite, to where to have your event, and from the decor to the menu itself - few of us are so flush that we can totally escape the cost factor. Sooner or later, we must make hard choices that can take a lot of the fun out of the party - at least for a while.
This is especially true when it comes to your entertainment. Last night, I set up my portable piano in the 5th floor lobby of a high-rise office building. The occasion was a gathering of the board of directors of our local annual film festival. To be honest, I was their second choice - and a distant second at that. What they had really wanted was very classy harp music. But 1st-class harpists who can play 2 straight hours of movie themes are a rare commodity in my town, and thus are able to command a steep price. Pianists - on the other hand, and on a Tuesday night - are plentiful. It's simply a matter of supply and demand.
Besides, let's face it: a portable keyboard ain't a Steinway concert grand. I understand perfectly well that my instrument was something less than my hosts had originally had in mind. But, on this occasion, the financial realities worked in my favor. And, once I started interacting with the audience, my bosses seemed happy things had worked out the way they did.
On a related note - once upon a time, good bands were expensive and deejays were (relatively) cheap. Today, neither of those statements are necessarily true. On Saturday nights, a top deejay (with all the lights and sound gear, plus extra bells and whistles) can now cost as much as a good 4-piece variety band. How can this be?
Again - simple economics. Any town's top deejays are entertainers, not just song spinners. Like the harpists mentioned above, the cream of the crop are a rare - and therefore expensive - breed. Their weekend evenings tend to book a full year in advance. But all major U.S. cities have tons of musicians - especially, older musicians aged 40 and up.
Because of their age (and age alone), these veteran musicians - no matter how accomplished they are - are going to be in less demand for weddings and other parties where younger folks will be in attendance. Most of their Saturdays will not book a year in advance. Some weeks, they won't book at all. It makes them do two things, both of which benefit you the buyer: 1.) They will work harder than younger bands would (or even could). And 2.) they will work with you on pricing in a way that the town's top DJ or hot young band won't even consider.
This is an opportunity for you to have the financial realities in your favor. Those seasoned bands may strike you at first the same way my portable keyboard did to my employers last night. But, when you consider everything they offer you - dollar for dollar, and in terms of a solidly professional performance - you may make the same decision that my employers did. Like them, you could soon be very glad that you chose to get the most for your money (even if it's not the newest and shiniest.)

Gerald Levert Geralds World Rock Music CD Review

I can describe the latest release from Rock sensation Gerald Levert for you with just one word… Outstanding!
The CD kicks off with an outstanding track, Soul Mate, that I suspect will be heard on radio stations everywhere, and deservedly so. It really is a very nice track.
Rock music fans will recognize some of the well known guests that have been assembled to play along with Levert on several of the tracks. Artists like Randy Bowland and Emma Kummrow just to name a couple.
This is a first rate CD, delivering a little something for everyone. I give it two thumbs up. It’s quite simply great listening. A must buy for the Rock fan.
While the entire CD is outstanding some of my favorites are track 2 - DJ Played Our Song, track 3 - What Makes It Good To You, and track 15 - Dream With No Love
My Bonus Pick, and the one that got Sore [...as in "Stuck On REpeat"] is track 1 - Soul Mate. It’s a great track!

Eric Darius “Night On The Town” Smooth Jazz Music CD Review

The exceptionally talented Smooth Jazz artist Eric Darius has released his CD entitled Night On The Town. I am very confident and happy to announce that I believe Eric Darius fans, and Smooth Jazz fans alike will be pleased with this one. With the release of Night On The Town Eric Darius’s artistic excellence is on full display as he has once again delivered a brilliant collection of tracks that could very well be his best work to date.
Night On The Town literally grabs your attention right from the beginning with Joy Ride and doesn't let go until the very last note of the very last song You're So Fine, which is another great track by the way.
One of the refreshingly nice things about this CD is the way all of the participating artists seem to be really enjoying themselves. Combine that with the overall presentation and you’ve got one of Eric Darius’s most impressive releases ever.
Overall Night On The Town is an outstanding release. What I call must have music. I give it two thumbs up and is most definetly a worthy addition to any Smooth Jazz collection. Truly an outstanding Smooth Jazz CD. One of those that is completely void of any wasted time, as each track is simply superb.
While the entire album is outstanding some of my favorites are track 2, Heads Up, track 4, Let It Flow, and track 8, Crusin.
